49 and 50 heads

What is the difference in the 25 stud 49 and 50 head? If it is only the extra hole for a heater hose, then two of the same number heads could be used on an engine? Talking 38-48 24 stud engines.

I assume you ment 24 stud heads, should bold on, but some older engines have different shaped water ports in the center.

As I understand it you are not looking to install 8BA heads on 59AB but want to know if you can put two 59AB 6049 right side or two 6050 left hand on the same engine. Is that correct?

Good point, I have reread the original question and it seems a bit confusing to me, but 34PKUP may have the correct interruption! If the question is as 34PKUP states the answer is no, 8ba heads are right and left side. 59a heads are interchangeable between right and left side. The above post about modifying the cooling holes still applies if you put 59a heads on a 8ba.

That is correct. As a matter of fact I have two Canadian 6050 heads I would like to use on a pre48 24 stud block.

Again, do you have 59a heads?
The 6050 number is meaningless without the prefix number to indicate the year and type.
All Ford,Mercury and Lincoln engines use the same base number.

You probably dont care, but the early 49 head had a special boss for the oil filter. Later used the head bolts for filter mounting.
If you use a 59ab head gasket with 8ba style heads, and you plug the water pump bypass holes at the front of the 8ba heads, itll work.

Sorry Russ , think you have it wrong. '48 8BA pickup and '49 car did not have the oil filter boss. '50 and up did.

There was a difference in valve angles on the early engines so the ones that were made in the beginning of the low water pump design (24-stud) may have some differences in the valve relief area in the chambers. The best I could say is that a person just needs to make certain there is enough chamber clearance for the valves.

I am talking about pre 49 heads on a pre 49 59ab engine. There is a different part number on early 24 stud heads, 6049 and 6059 and I am asking what the difference is between the two heads. Am not putting early water outlet in center of head units on a 49-53 block or 49-53 heads on an early 59ab engine.

Think the way you started off your original post may have lead to the confusion. As far as I know all of the 59a style heads are interchangeable on any of the blocks.

6049 was originally intended to be installed as a PASSENGER-side head.

6050 was originally intended to be installed as a Driver-side head.

What V8Coopman said, I just looked up the part numbers. I have never paid any attention to it!!

"There is a different part number on early 24 stud heads, 6049 and 6059"

And as V8 stated, think it is 6049 and 6050.

Question is what is the difference? I know that some of the early blocks (3 1/16) were different somehow in the valve location but later 59ab 3 3/16 were not. I have two very good Canadian 50 heads that I would like to put on a 3 3/16 engine.

Suspect the only difference may be the heater/temp gauge holes.
If you have a 6049 head, compare it to the 6050 to see if there are any measurable differences.
