Interesting factoid: The 1938 LZ carried the type of gears and synchos adopted by Ford during 1939. The new parts carried 1938 Ford part numbers but were not apparently used at all on '38 Fords.
At Hershey a couple of years ago I bought an empty '38-9 LZ case and shifter because I like the odd shifter setup. The dealer told me smugly he had removed the gears to sell on Ebay since Zephyr gears were Hot $tuff...always wondered how that all ended up!
Posting this one for a friend of mine with no computer. He wants to know which aftermarket Zephyr gears are worth buying. There has been some word that some Made in USA gears fail. Sure finding originals would be the way to go but if you can't get your hands on some which repops are good?
I've got a set of the old Speedway 3.55 gears (not a typo, they are realy 3.55:1) and I believe they were made in Italy. They were well made as far as finish on the metal is concerned but they just didn't know the pinion quill end would not fit through the banjo bore without grinding the heal of each tooth a little. It made a few Speedway customers unhappy to say the least.
