Virus Warning

I received an email from a local Model A club member whose email name is "ford3031". When I opened it a virus warning came up from an unknown source that cautioned me to call them immediately and not restart my computer. I assume their computer has been infected and their email list stolen. There was a button on the message that said “ok” but I avoided clicking it since that was obviously what they wanted me to do. I shut off my computer since they cautioned me not to do so and I figured I would risk it. I assume that if I called their number they would instruct me to give them control of my computer and then the problems would really begin. If anyone clicked ok please let the rest of us know what happened, otherwise be warned.

If any computer screen pops up without your action, you can close it by pressing "Alt" and F4 simultaneously , this key code is the default way to close the current open window on your computer, if it's a true virus, even clicking the "x" in the upper right hand corner can cause code to be executed (just remember, you didn't ask for the window, the "off" switch might be wired as the "ON") This works for any open window on your computer, so you can try this out on your own and you can google it to make sure I'm not BS'ing you

Alt, F4 did not work on my Windows 10 P/C. Don't know why????

Alt, Ctrl, Del does work like it always did.

I own a computer repair shop and see this all the time. Its a common scam trying to get you call a (usually Indian) fake tech support company. Sometimes they say they are Microsoft or Apple but they are all con artists that just want your credit card number.

If you see this message on Windows what you need to do is hold down these three keys at the same time
1. The control key (bottom left "ctrl")
2. "alt" to the right of the control key
3. "delete" (to the right of the enter key in the middle (usually))

Once you hold those three keys down it should display a menu with the last option being "start task manager". Click that. Now you need to click the "applications" tab and click on internet explorer (or firefox or chrome, whatever internet browser/software you are using). Then click "end task". That should force close the page and bring you back to the desktop. Now relaunch your internet browser, and if it asks you to "restore tabs" or windows, choose no.

On Mac, the process is a little different. If you are stuck at the virus pop-up, click the apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and click "force quit".
Click on safari and click "force quit".
Now when you go to reopen safari, you have to hold down the "shift key" while you click the safari icon so it doesn't automatically restore the page that is displaying the virus message.

Or you can hold down the power button on your computer for about 5 seconds until the machine shuts off completely. Once you bring it back on be sure to hold down the shift key when you click the safari icon to prevent the page from reloading back onto the screen.

Hope this helps.

I did a query on Microsofts site, apparently the "alt F4" is supposed to work in iwndows 10...but some people are having problems, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...ndows-10/a2457a64-f8d4-4a54-be43-06ee2e4670c8

Sorry to the forum for being "off topic", I'm just trying to help

Thanks for the "off topic" info. We do need this info to protect us.

Another scam here in this area is when a person gets a call and they say they are from the IRS and unless you pay them you will be sent to the slammer. So look out for that one also.

I had some fun with them by yelling "I'm armed to the teeth, come and get me mother f$$ker". My wife dropped what she was working on and and asked what the hell was wrong with me.

ooh or i love the phone call saying your computer is infected then ask if your near a computer haha. then they want you to log in and probably grant them access and whatnot.

what i find fun to do is see how long i can keep them on the line the rare chance i do answer, i then proceed to try to sell them something like an infomercial.

I got that IRS one, they wanted me to send money or go to jail, 1st they wanted my SS#, I told them to read it to me and I would confirm if it was right, they said it doesn't work that way, so I said give me my full name and I will confirm that, they said they could not do that, so I said can you read the address of the account, they said no.
So I said "You don't know my SS#, you don't know my name and you don't know my address...FU, come find me." click

I tried that and wasn't impressed, it closed all the 6 or 8 pages that I had open, not just the one.

If you get the bogus irs call just tell them to send it in writing. That would make it mail fraud and actionable.

Good action, but when someone mentions YOU and the IRS in same sentence..because of what has been developing in that federal agency...doesn't that make you pucker up and get your attention .

After a dozen or so calls from the 'irs' as mentioned and over a looong period of time, someone in the household actually went to police dept with recordings, dates, times, etc, etc...ho hum it's lunch time response. Darn near got knocked out for starting to say...(gulp)told you so :D !

Well, last time threatening call received. I answered and 'invited' caller to come inspect records and collect money owed. Briefly informed of my ...umm, ahh, law abiding history and that I was preparing welcome (read: whatever you want it to). No more calls:rolleyes: !!

Got one the other day from the Treasury Department or though they said. Sounded like a call center in the background. Told them that I did not believed them and hung up. Also get a lot of calls that we have won a trip to the Caribbean. Told them have had several trips there and was paid by the US to take these trips. Could they beat that offer.
