Head Gasket talk/info...

I've ordered several BEST gaskets, that they recommended, for 4" bored B cylinders. NONE of these gaskets fit and stick out slightly into combustion chamber. We all know that that situation is not desirable ! What is integrity anyway :( ?
Anyone run a 4" bore A or B ? Does anyone have a gasket that they have run on a 4" bore successfully ? Please give maker and part #, if so :).

Have you tried SOSS, Charlie Yapp 513 724 0700 www.secretsofspeed.com

I'm running a Felpro R3 on a Brumfield 5.9 head with no problems. My engine is bored .125 over, so I'm at 4.000 inches bore.

Hardtimes, what head are you using?? just curious.

Hey waxhead,
Good question.
I just removed the pictured Winfiend from my newly re-born '32 B.
I ran this engine for maybe 4/5 minutes a few days ago, when I noticed water coming out of the exhaust header pipes. It was determined to be coming from #3 and #4. I suspected the new copper clad 509. With head removed, I miked all four of the gasket bores. Yeah, I'm shaky/old , but many tries came up with head gasket diam. of 3.976 ...pretty close for all four gasket holes. Close but .024 is a heck of a lot too small, IMO, to have sticking out into combustion zone. What is your opinion on 'how much is too much' in this situation ? Even if halved at .012 per side. Is that acceptable to any of you guys ?
So, I got out a new composite#573, same make, and it measured darn near same same +/- a thousand. It has a nice steel edging surrounding the chambers, but that would be toast when the comb flame was done with.

I am wondering what it might cost for a fellow to have a gasket maker to make a whole bundle of good quality 4" composite and/or copper clad head gaskets ?
BTW...it ran/sounded sweet, but didn't want to take chance on something going array, as I was alone.

Felpro 7013 R1(white Gasket ctr) Std up to .060-3 15/16,Hard to find: R-3 or 4, 4 1/16-.125 over size. new repo R--3 presently produced not to good to use. 7013-R1 Hard to find. Check on the other Ahooga.com Larry Brumfield will have all the answers you need on Heads and Gaskets usually on nightly. Great Guy very Helpful,

Rick any gasket overhang into the combustion chamber is going to fail
in fact I try to go the other way by a few thou 0.005"-0.010"due to gasket growth when compressed
Felpro 7013 tend to have enough clearance around the bore but can be tight in other spots Best 573 tend to have better clearance around the valves
Note gaskets seam to vary from batch to batch I have gaskets with the same part No stamped on them but are different

Hey colin, thanks for your input :)
Well, I'm with your thinking regarding 'any overhang'...and BOTH of the gaskets that I've mentioned and measured do have overhang..aplenty on a 4" bore. When measuring, I also noticed the variations that you mention. Now, I know that gasket making is not rocket science, but what the heck is that variance all about ?
As a remedy, I'm going to take our friend Vince up on his offer to help out in this matter :) !

BTW...I did not go out to 4" willingly. It was a case of necessity to clean up a big bored B that an old timer had raced the heck out of.
All should be well with Vince's help. And , since I now am aware of the lack of proper big bore gaskets, I'll refrain from 4" bore or sleeve and bore.

Do you use sealant and if so what is your process, i.e.- seal with what ? and both sides/one side ? I've experimented but have been informed by one old racer that silver paint is what to use as it dries/seals and that copper coat does not dry totally ?

The gasket doesn't fit the engine? I'm running a 509 g best on a .125" and a B head. Fits fine. It's not copper.

Hey Chuck,
What compression ratio is that engine using ?

Well, without doubt, the gauged measurements show overhang into cyl area. It is a matter is time , if overhand exists, till consequences exist.
I have at least 7.5:1 cr and that will bring out any flaws in building IMO, quicker than say 5:1 ?

Hey Vince,
Thanks for sharing, both your knowledge and valued resources (web site and supplies :))!
PM sent....

What is the deal with the gasket that Snyder's recommends for their 5.5 head? The one with the silicone ribs. It looks nice, but some say not to use it?

It's a police head, no steam holes. If I remember correctly, best recommended the 509g . I do know I did a lay over on both head and the bore(125" over), and it was a good fit. I've been using it for several years, at 2000 miles per year.

"I've experimented but have been informed by one old racer that silver paint is what to use as it dries/seals and that copper coat does not dry totally ?"

Silver paint was used here to reuse a copper head gasket until Hylomar came on the scene. Pretty cool to use something from Rolls Royce on a rust bucket.

Hey updraught,,
Thanks for input :) ! I'll check out the Hylomar brand. The way this old rust bucket eats up $, I think that it believes that it IS a Rolls
