Theres some stuff that happens from time to time thats just too damn cool not to tell, even if its a personal screw up.
I built a crab for a customer on a new build last summer and he just got the chance to start the engine.
Calls me and says it runs great ( or at least kinda great) BUT only runs on six cylinders !
Also he had to adjust the timing a bunch with the timing slot to get it to fire at all.
Hes a local guy and brought it in this morning.

BUBBAS TECH TIP= IF YOU PUT A SIX CYLINDER DISTRIBUTOR CAM IN A V8 IT WILL RUN , HOWEVER WILL ONLY FIRE SIX TIMES ...:eek::eek::D

I think i will just tell him it was bad parts , what ya think ?????:eek::confused:

That was a good one bubba. We all screw up once in a while. Admit it to the guy and i think you will make a friend for life, honesty is still the best policy.Im sure he will understand. OMO ken ct.:):) LOL on that one!

Bubba, know what? That'd be easy to do ....

I'm trying to think what would have warned you that it was a 6 cylinder.

If you spun it on your Allen, unless you actually counted the strobes (who does?) there'd be no help there. I have not set a 6 cylinder crab on a strobe machine, but guess that you could set the dwell to V8 specs no trouble.

If someone simply used feeler gauges, no warning.

Only thing that might have saved you is a KRW fixture if you ran it through all 8(!) cylinders like one should and paid attention to the firing lines.

Wow. Good post. I eagerly await my next screw-up.

I can remember callin my second wife by my first wife's name. Does that count as an understandable adjustment error?

Well I suppose two cylinders were firing at the right time, as to the others, it's anybody's guess!

Probably a lot of people on here remember the Gus Wilson "Model Garage" stories that appeared every month in Poular Science for many decades, I think late '20's into early '60's.
One yarn hinged on a Y-block that had just gotten a new distributor, and would crank for a while then fire up for a few seconds and die. The diagnosis...interchange of Ford and Lincoln stuff, one with 10 teeth, the other with 11, allowing the thing to drift into a useful place every few revolutions.

Would those be Chinese or American bad parts?
