Pick up spare tire carrier

Del in NE Ohio

One of my goals this winter is to fabricate a spare tire carrier that would allow me to put the spare under the bed of my '31 CCPU. There is all kinds of room aft of the rear cross member. A fellow 'barner sent me photos of the carrier on his truck that used a winch assy from a modern truck. The owner can't tell me what truck this carrier came from. This looks like a good solution. I am hoping that someone can identify this winch/carrier so I know what to look for. The first two photos show the carrier installed on his '29 CCPU and the last photo I found on the 'net.

Looks kinda like an S10 ....however look on eBay for "Spare Tire Hoist" and you will likely find one that fits your needs & budget.

I had model A car bumperettes and crossbar on my 28 pickup.

The spare slid in and sat very neatly on top of the crossbar.

Warning! That cable winch is a good idea but be sure and keep a watch about salt water rusting it. A good friend just recently had his cable on a Dodge Ram break going down the road about 65 mph and dam near flipped his truck. The car behind barely missed the tire and wheel and then it went threw the front of someones house. Lucky no one was hurt and no one was home. His insurance took care of the house but wouldn't pay for another tire and wheel.

In this part of Ohio, horse manure (courtesy of my Amish neighbors) is a far greater threat to my "A" than saltwater!

I was just getting ready to post the same thing. I saw lots of rusted ends at the junk yard. The cable is long enough to cut off the last foot of rust and get to the good cable, then crimp a new end on. Be sure the bracket is on the cable before you crimp the new slug on.

Reminds me of when a club I belonged to (not A) used to go to a weekend car show and corn roast in Wooster, OH. One guy drove his '35 Ford after a rain and coated the underside of it with horse fertilizer. Talk about stink and even using a car wash didn't get all of it off.
