light rod

Headlights had in the beginning 1 bulb only with parking/low beam only! is this what you have?

When you move the switch to the high beam position, does the tail light stay on? If it does, I would suspect the bulbs, check if both bulbs have two filaments and that the filaments are intact. Another possibility is worn or corroded contacts in the switch housing at the bottom of the steering column.

Gary WA, I think your right. I took it apart and it only has 3 position, and this is a 1930 pickup new to me so most things are not working. I cleaned gas tank replaced fuel lines, rebuilt carb. engine seems to run good no smoke or noise
so far. So if I want high beams i will need new wiring harness? am i correct.
Thanks to all for the help. Joe

If the switch you have only has three positions, you will need a new
harness. The harness pictured below will work for park, low, and high beam.

The contact plate on the harness must match the switch assembly.
Try doing a search for "28 vs. 29 switch".
I'm not sure if those exact words will find it, but I posted pictures of both styles of switches a few years ago.

Tom,

I think you are right. I was assuming that the contact plate would work on either, but looking at Bratton's, they mention specific light switch assembly for single bulb, but for 1928 cars. It would be worth checking into before buying just the harness.

Here is your plates and harnesses configurations/How to restore your Model A Vol 7 pg 33. easy fix.

Tom V, I think I have mismatched parts my harness matches the one with 9 brass tabs. When I put the spider in the switch theres limited travel, like 3 positions. could I find just another switch. You guys are awesome.
Thanks for the help. Joe

I saw a original switch housing on ebay, I just don't know if its the right one.
Can someone look at it and see if its the right one. I would like to use original parts if possible. Thanks joe

How about a link to the one your looking at on eBay?

Mike posted one of my pictures in #10, but this is the picture for the TWOLITE system only.

The earlier switch used with the fluted lens headlamps must match and is pictured above in #9. Notice the switch spider and contact plate each has 4 contacts. This has 3 positions, headlamps, off, and parking lamps. Some people change the bulb from a headlamp/parking bulb to a bright/dim headlamps bulb.

The fluted headlamps (3 position switch) was used from the start to February 1929, when the new TWOLITE headlamps with a 4 position switch was introduced.

Here's my other picture, showing the 1928-early 29 switch and contact plate. This is for the single bulb fluted headlamps only.
