32-34 Ring Gear ID

I found what I think to be a 32-34 3.54 ring and pinion set. I can ID the pinion, but how do I tell if the ring gear is correct? Are they different than 35 and later? I want to know what I am looking at before I buy...

Thanks,

Neal

There is a number stamped clearly on the end of the pinion.Make sure the dia of the 10 spline is approx same as the carrier bearing surface- 35-36 is much larger. The top of the teeth on the pinion are also shaved off to fit in the housing. On the ring gear -clean it good and on the backside(flat side) there are 4 numbers hand written with an electric pencil-those should be the same as on the end of the pinion. If they match you are good to go.

Thanks for the info. I positively ID'd the pinion as 32-34...and the ring gear is the correct tooth count...I just want to make sure I don't get mis-matched years. Are the 32-34 ring gears physically different than 35-36? This stuff is on a shelf with about 10 other ring/pinions sets...so they could've gotten mixed up.

Thanks,

Neal

Yes they are different ,otherwise they would interchange. Deuce Lover told you what to look for.

OK, he described what to look for on the pinion...and I know there is a 32-34 3.54 pinion there. BUT...there is a stack of 10 or 20 ring gears...I'd like to know if there is some distinguishing difference in the RING GEARs...so I don't have to clean the flat side of each one looking for the 4 numbers...that's all...

Neal, the only dead cert way is to get cleaning and find the matching numbers.
They can't all have the correct teeth count, can they?? Surely that would narrow it down??
Mart.

Neal, They have to be a matched set anyway so if you don't find a ring gear with the 4 matching numbers you are out of luck.If you find a late 32- 34 ring gear(39 tooth) and it does not have the matching number and you spend the time and money to install them it will most likely howl like a quickchange. Is the pinion you have have 11 teeth?

Yes, there was an 11 tooth 32-34 pinion and a 39 tooth ring gear on the shelf together. I will check the numbers to see if they are a match.

So...not a good idea to mix and match rings and pinions...even if they are all NOS?

Neal

Neal,I have had several NOS R&P gears and they were always matched sets. They were lapped at the factory in a jig then the ring gear was numbered to the pinion.I do not believe Ford sold the R&P separately ,only as sets.

My experience too...there will be a number on the two gears that will match if they were made as a set. They were never sold as individual parts.

I've got a 34' rear end apart right now. I want to go to 3.78 with 10 spline pinion. I have a NOS 10 spline pinion with the 4 digit number. I also have a NOS 34 tooth ring gear. The pinion gears are much thicker than the 4.11 gear so assume a higher gear. It seems to match the ring gear on the bench. The only marking I can find on the ring gear is a date 3-36. Maybe I should go over it again with a magnifying glass. Would you use the set without finding a number to match??
I heard somewhere that replacement gears were dated.
Also, the end of the pinion sometimes has "Ford 2" or "Ford 3" etc along with the 4 digit number. Wonder if it means anything.

As much work as it is to put a banjo rear together why would you want to assemble with a mismatched set and have to take it apart again ? Sometimes to find the electric pencil hand script on the flat surface you might have to tip it up or down in good light to see it but I assure you its there.Remember its hand written and quite large.

The early 32 one is the same as a Model A with no out rigger bearing on the pinion .Then later 32to 34 came with the out rigger ,35 to 36 can be modified to fit ,I had a new old stock one that I took to be a matched pair ,after fitting it was real noisy.

Thanks a lot!!! After much examination under lights at various angles I found numbers very lightly etched in there. Almost invisable! Now, I found two different 4 digit numbers..........One of which matches my pinion. The matching number is much larger than the other which appears to may have been a screw-up? The guy sure wasn't big on penmanship but the digits are recognizable. About an inch high and scrawled across the surface. So, I'm no longer pokin around in the dark here. Thanks again!

Thats Ok straight plipes We do our best here on the barn
