Cleaning Gas Tank

I have another issue with the 1929 pickup I just got....is there a good method for cleaning the gas tank without having to remove it?

I think the best way is to remove it, there are things in that tank you might not be able to get out, I removed a small leaf, rubber gasket, pieces of a cork gasket and rust particles. It only took me 1 hour to remove tank, now I can put stainless nuts and bolts instead of the mixed sizes of rusty bolts.

Thanks....should have run a search first. I'll read everything I find, but what I have is very fine rust, makes the gas cloudy. Appreciate all the advice on this forum!

Hey "Gunner!"

Will Evaporust work well on an unknown condition 30 radiator? Would a gallon do? Soaking methods?

Thank you, Sir! (Us Pennsylvanians have to stick together.)

It sure can't hurt.. I would fill it over the tubes so however much that is?? Block off the lower neck and stand it up. For a few days... Remember it's reusable

If you just have the fine rust powder type of stuff I would just try to flush it out with gasoline. Put a couple of gallons in and shake the car real good and drain out. You can filter the gas through a sock or such and re-use the gas again for a second, third etc... flush of the tank. Put in a pencil filter when satisfied and you should be good for many miles.

Also search * wix 33039 *. And * evaporust *

as Mitch said, go with the Wix 33039, but check the filter sometimes or keep an extra in the car, my car stopped running when I was on the road, I pulled over and took out the wix filter, which caught a good amount of sediment. I cleaned the wix out, started the car right up and drove away. The Wix caught all the sediment that I never saw in the glass bowl for a visual warning.

Although not really applying to the post you can clean a tank out using EXTREME MEASURES . I needed a round speedo tank for my late 30 pickup project . The only one I had came with the desperate cab I had . It had been out in the weather with no gas cap on for many years and fairly full of debris .I got most out using all known measures but a loud clonk from within I could not clear . HMMM I thought " In for a penny in for a pound" as we say in The Mother Country I was very sure the tank was gas free so I cut the top of the tank out using a thin cutting disc on a angle grinder . The baffles are only attached at the bottom so you can lift the top out no problem . The clonk turned out to be a wax bees nest the size of a lemon trapped behind an outermost baffle . It was too big to pass over the baffle top. When I cut the tank I left an "edge" of about 4" around the outside . After a good clean out I migged the top back in . The tank is very rigid so no distortion . Ground the welds back and a skim of bondo and now as good as new .I did this 3 years ago and minimal rust in the glass filter bowl . Even if your weld has a pin hole you will never fill the gas tank to over flowing so no problem . Be advised never do this on a tank that is not sure gas free or your hobby may come to an abrupt halt !!! . When in doubt get a chemist to check it .
