" I was given a PPL book from a friend that is near mint. I think its original, another
friend, Ford guy, said no way, it does not have a copyright date anywhere in the book!
Compared to the repop, the cover feels thicker and looks ALMOST like it has a pattern
to it, it has a " effective October 1, 1928 " date, the same on the first page, The pages
on the inside, the pictures and writings, are clear an crisp, the pages are not shinny.

How do you tell ? What is it worth, I would like to give the man some thing more than
a " thank you very much " any idea?

PS .....I did find a" copyright 1928 " on the second or third page, at the bottom. "

I asked this question to Steve Plucker.....he said try the Ford Barn...
..any help?

Thank you, Dudley

here are a few pictures of a couple of original books and one reproduction
compared to the reproduction, the originals have a slight sheen, not as much as the instruction books ,but much more than the repros
the dead give away is the little thingie in the middle of the cover.the second picture is original and the last picture is a repro

I have a good quality reprint of the Oct.1, 1929 PPL and the pages don't have a sheen.

I also have an excellent reprint of a mid 1931 PPL and the pages are high quality with a high gloss.

I don't think either of the reprints I have are being made any more.

As mentioned, the original PPL didn't have much sheen, and most of my original PPL's have some rust on the staples.

I have an original PPL, October 1, 1928, and it looks just like photo 2 sent by "mot", same mark above effective date. Slight sheen on pages but good clear pictures and print.

Original Ford Model a parts book cover photo.

Here is what an original parts book cover looks like, for what it may be worth:

Oh yeah, this one is an export parts book, printed in Germany, for the Czechoslovak market.

I just received a German '28-34! Germans sure gave their parts long names...
There are a few interesting odditities, like a tachometer for the AA.

of course there are others that dont have the thingie or are brown in color and were printed in december 1933 :)
but yours looks correct Dudly

Bruce,

"Tachometer" is the German word for speedometer. The Germans like to put, what for us would be two words, together to form one very long word....thus some of the parts names can look intimidatingly long....but are actually quite descriptive.

Tom 68-c,

I looked at your first post, the " ff " and the " , " are a dead give-a-way, I also think
it's correct.

Don Turley,

Were did you find a January 1, 1928 reprint, would like to have one of those.

The English an German PPL are neat!

Thanks to all, Dudley

I've also have a original April 1, 1927 PPL for Model T; the cross reference to T part number that appear in the Jan. 1, 1928 PPL all appear in the T PPL.
