Mercury Turn Signals?

What year did Ford/Mercury first start putting the turn signal switch inside the steering column??? I have a 54 Mercury and need to replace the switch/wiring, which in 54 was inside the steering column. I will be looking for another switch so just want to know if they used the same switch and wiring in 52/53.
Also, if anybody knows who might have or where I might find this switch???And would Ford and Mercury be the same??

Thanks,
Steve

Mercury was 1949 with the first post war change. I'm not sure if is was standard here in the US but It was for the later 50 & 51 US production. Canadian stuff is different though so you will need to know that.

Ford cars were still optional till 52 but I can't be 100% certain of that.

I had a 50 Lincoln that had the wiring in the column.

I think the switch depends on the type of column. If you have the column that is two piece(shifter separate from the mast jacket) the Ford switch from '52 to about '60 will work. If you have the column that has the shift tube inside the column you may have to look at switches that are Mercury specific. In the first instance you can use the switch that is supplied by those that sell parts for the 54-56 passenger cars or F-100 pickups. In the second instance you might check with those suppliers that sell the 55-57 T-Bird parts.

signal lights were still an option for 1953 Fords. I have a coupe with no signal lights. It also lacks wiring in the steering column and to either tail or parking lights.

1952,1953 Ford or Mercury switch will work in your 1954 Mercury. If there is no physical damage to your switch cleaning and lube will usually get them working.

Most of the FoMoCo vehicles with turn signals used a sliding switch inside a metal housing. The early ones had the cloth & resin insulation and the later ones had the plastic wire insulation. It is not too much of a chore to desolder one and resolder new wires on. I even see some NOS ones on flea-pay now and then. Some new types are available but I prefer the original ones for reliability and materials quality.

I'm not sure if the pre 49 Mercs used the same switch or not due to the style of the column.
