engine Oil Capacity

My instruction book says that the oil capacity is 5 quarts, but when I changed the oil today in my '28 roadster, it only took 3 quarts. What's up?

Should really take about 4 1/2 quarts. A pint or so stays in the dipper tray. Maybe you do not have the right dipstick.

Joe, when I got my A I fell for the same 5 Qt. changed the oil replaced the washer at the pan drain bolt filled her up and she would leak oil all over the place. Now I use about 4 1/2 qts. Straight 30w non detergent oil.

Wow have we all fallen for the 5 quart story. Just over 4 quarts for me or it leaks out the rear main.

There was a thread posted some time ago, maybe even on the old Fordbarn, about the dipstick dimensions. Does anyone else remember it?

Apparently not dipsticks are created equal.. So all I did upon changing the oil, I added the 4.5 qts and then marked the dipstick..

Completely dry (as in rebuilt) will take 5 qts. After running oil will remain in the dipper tray, valve galley, and oil pump shaft, leaving 4 1/2 (approx) during future oil changes.
