It was nice out today, so I took a drive

and used the opportunity to try out the video capabilities of my new phone.
This was along a stretch of the 101 in Encinitas, California - near Swami's Beach.

Video of my drive today

Where is Encinitas? Is it near Laguna Beach? Was That the PCH? How do you keep the camera so stable as I can see the car wiggling but not the scenery outside? It looks like a nice ride on a beautiful day!

How fast were you going?
I was wondering the same thing. The video made it look really fast.

Don't know exactly (my speedometer stops at 45, no matter how fast my actual speed is), but probably somewhere right around 45-50 tops; on another part of this trip I had my friend (who was kind enough to shoot this video) check our actual speed with the GPS in his phone - at the highest comfortable speed I like to drive in a flat area, he was showing 50 mph (at which point the speedometer was showing 40). I was probably driving a tad slower than that during the video.

Encinitas is north of San Diego (yes, it is on the old PCH) - between it and Laguna Beach sits Camp Pendleton and about 50 miles of coast. Driving along the coast in San Diego is one of my favorite weekend drives - lots of pretty scenery to be seen.

My new phone's camera is advertised as having optical image stabilization - that must have kicked in to make the video smoother. (the engineer in me wonders how they manage to build an OIS mechanism so small as to fit in a camera module that's maybe a half inch square and less than a quarter inch thick).

Oh - almost forgot, here's an old photo of downtown Encinitas (just north of where I was in the video) supposedly from 1929:

Interesting picture. Notice how almost all the cars had demountable rims for spare tires. Also notice the strange fender paint on one car and the very boxy body of the car a few more up the line from it. Notice what looks like a center headlight on the Phaeton with white top.

Love the car radio!

Here's a better view of it - I figured if I'm going to add a radio to the car, it should at least look the part. I use an iPod loaded up with 1920s-1930s tunes and an FM transmitter to have appropriate music when I feel like it - although with the engine running, there's quite a bit of interference.

It's a Crosley CR82 - no longer in production, but they come up on ebay every so often (like this one). If you wait, you can usually manage to find one for around $25-$30, plus shipping (total outlay of $40-$45).

I think the phones somewhat wide angle lens makes it appear a little faster than it really is; but a very nice video for sure!

Neat video and neat period picture. Enjoyed seeing both.

It always seems that So. California at least, the street scenes and such, have changed drastically compared to say New England and the Midwest. Hard to recognize a lot of places along US 101 today from even the late 50's.

Don't be shy post more as you get them!! Pretty neat stuff!! I think we all like them.

Wouldn't it be GREAT if we all posted a drive? Then we'd be able to go across country in our A's!
