Crank shaft end float

Took my newly aquired 30 pickup out on its maiden voyage today . I knew the crank had 15 thou end float so expected a sizable rear main leak . Much to my surprise no leak the cotter key (split pin in England) in the flywheel housing remained dry ,I was much amazed . So it goes to show that too much end float does not have to cause a rear main leak .

John in a really lovely sunny day but rain soon Suffolk County England.

Hey john,
If you know, are crank seals original or modern  I would think that modern seals, if installed correctly, might have more tolerance against leaks , than stock cork ?

The end float in my ccpu is in the neighborhood of 20 thou...there is a distinct "klunk" when depressing the clutch...

And it's been like that for years and who knows how many miles...at least 400 since it's been in my possession..

Since I installed the gasket between the block and fly wheel housing the leakage is minimal..a couple drops after a drive..."F" on the dip stick...

No doubt it will fail catastrophically one of these days, but for now it's just fine (replacement engine is at the machinist's shop!)

You might try one of these..

I was going to but found that my rear main babbitt was loose on the block so I chose not to waken that sleeping giant...

The engine is stock no rear seal modifications . I had bought the bronze thrust setup gizmo as I did expect I would need it. My sons woody definately does need one so it will be used there .

Hey John,
Looks good, the absence of oil after 100 mi
Now, about that 'brown' stuff covering everything :) !

On my coupe, I can blip the throttle and see the crank pulley move forward a little. I've never indicated it, but I assume that if I can see it move, it's probably quite an excessive amount of end play. But it has never leaked. And it's not gotten any worse over time.

The brown stuff is genuine patina !!! .The running of this truck was out in the weather in a yard for at least 20 years . I had a correct bill of sale which reflected its condition . We pay 5% historic import duty based on the bill of sale . Normally vehicles are not inspected but sometimes the customs man makes a spot check . If they dont agree as regards value they will get a valuation from an auction house and then you pay 20% . I did not want to clean and paint and pay extra duty on my labours if it were inspected .

Should read "running gear" . I did pull the pan and popped the dipper tray, cleaned out the valve chest and new oil in the trans, rear end and greased evertthing else . Very pleased with it and I had always hankered after a 30/31 pickup and this one has the Budd cab and narrow bed .
