is the door skin below the belt line the same for the 38/39/40 (and perhaps more) pickup doors?? if so, exactly how far into the 40's are they the same. i realize that the belt line itself is only the same from 38 and 39, but what about the rest of the door (if you ignore the physical differences in the belt line features)?

thanks for the help and opinions.

thank you. could you conclude from that that the door skins (below the belt line would also be the same for that period of time 38-47?? i realize that is a stretch somewhat, but i keep hitting dead ends trying to find 38-39 door skins or someone to make them.

thanks for the quick reply.

unfortunately (or so it seems) i need the entire skin belt line down, it seems there are plenty of manufacturers of lower patch panels but they are only 8" in height. it seems that no one is reproducing them that i have been able to find so far. it's really getting frustrating, lol.

As there are no reveals on the outer skin a good craftsman should easily (though not cheaply) make one with an english wheel.

I am aware that it should be able to made, but I have tried several known metal workers her in the area and everyone said they weren't willing to try it.. I even tried the best motorcycle metal guy and he said it was outside his area.. I don't know if it's too small a job or they really aren't comfortable trying it.. That's about par for the course in south Florida... I have been told by at least 4 of the m Joe ford classic parts guys that there is no one reproducing them and try to find a good complete door.. I really thought like you all that it wasn't some kind of specialized deal that required a brain surgeon.. I'm coming to realize I was totally wrong

you can try what we did. remove the skin from the door, go to a salvage yard and put the skin over several roofs, bigger doors, etc. until you find the correct compound curve you need and go from there. I would also suspect that a door from any old Ford car from the era would have the correct shape, as stated you can purchase the bottom part as reproduction

yes, that has been suggested by someone else a bit ago. i have it in the back of my mind as the fall back plan. i appreciate the suggestions and the methodology that you employed.

I see pickup doors that are rust free fairly often. There are a lot of desert junkyards that part out old vehicles. I can't help but think there are some good ones out there. Maybe a nationwide craigslist search too. Shipping isn't cheap for sure, but none of the above mentioned fixes are. Just my .02. Fastenal, greyhound and some online shippers are way cheaper than calling yellow freight etc. I recently had a 700 lb diesel engine shipped from Texas to Seattle for 400.00 on engineshipping.com. Yellow freight had quoted me 1450.00. Funny, when it arrived it was in on a pallet in a UPS semi-truck. These brokers buy unused space from carriers. The internet is our friend.

thanks, i have tried a few yards but so far no luck. i appreciate the suggestions. craigs list is a good one, never thought about that for a national search. very familiar with greyhound (just had a hood shipped that way and have used them in the past). i actually bought a cab in ohio and had it shipped via a shipping broker to south florida, and it too arrived on a UPS truck, lol.
