Hi everybody,

I would likr to get some advice here, I want to replace my car's roof and new padding have to be bought. as it is at least 30 years ago I did something like this and have no idee ( read forgotten ) about the material thickness and the type. My wife told me maybe the filler she uses for here quilts could be usefull. If so what should the thickness be ? Your advice please.

Thanks ,

Gerard

You can buy the complete roof kits from many of the Model A suppliers and I think it would be more economical than finding the different materials separately.

There are a number of different quality of top fabrics on the market. I have been very pleased with what Le Baron-Bonney supplies.

Since my wife is also a quilter, I use a thick quilt padding that she generally buys at JoAnne's Fabrics with a 40 or 50% discount coupon. Gar Williams

I like the padding they use in the LeBaron Bonney kits. Some of the others are too thick and the top looks too "puffy" after installation, just my opinion.

I had bought some non-LBB top fabric, when I saw the difference between theirs and what I had, I got some of theirs to use instead. The synthetic quilting material worked fine for me.

Hey Gerard, Personally I use 1/8" closed cell foam - but then I'm a heretic. If you want more traditional advice you might check Marco's website - abarnyard.com - he has a complete section on reroofing including materials. Good reading even if you deviate from it some. (and we all know what a deviate you are)
Best Regards,
Larry

I take this as a compliment Larry.

Many thanks for all the reply's gentleman, yes I was aware of Marco's website but there is no info about the material used or the thickness.

I've seen several Model As with too thick padding under the roof. They look like they're about to explode. I've also seen some with not enough padding. They look like an underfed horse. I think I'd use a LeBaron Bonney kit. They usually know what they're doing

Hey Gerard-- I've got a piece of LB cotton wadding left over from kit I got for the '31 p.u. It's about 1-3/4" - 1-7/8" thick without compressing it. It's a fairly dense, white, synthetic cotton, does burn when held to flame-- I realize you may want to buy it up there in Canada, The postal fees are horrendous to cross the border--LeBaron- Bonney does know what they are doing, and a fair price compared to some of the "junk" being sold out there today. Aerocraft has a good idea about JoAnn Fabrics if you have them up there. They may have it.--Good luck!

If you want to try to find the padding locally rather than order from a vendor why don't you contact Bratton's and ask them about the thickness of the padding they sell. I'm sure they wouldn't mind.

The reason I asked the Barn here, Why should I order the stuff from a supplier , pay import duty's ( 14 % ) and postage or freight . when the stuf they might supply me is the same what I can get around the corner here ?
