1932 Firewall Linkage to Stromberg's

I have a '32 Roadster; stock firewall with the stock throttle linkage bolted to it.
I have a pair of Stromberg 97's bolted to a vintage dual intake.

Anyone have a recommendation on linkage that attaches from the firewall to the rear carb?

I ask as I currently have linkage that reaches to the front carb, though it would require me to cut off a small arm with a ball end on the rear carb....that gets in the way.

Thanks!

On the setup I have on my roadster I connected the pedal to the right side as you show in your picture. I tied the two carbs together on the left side of the carbs.

I did the same thing as 32phil on my 32 roadster and coupe, found (or made, don't remember) a short linkage that reached the rear carb and put 2 arms on the drivers side that hooked the 2 together. PM me with your email if you want pictures,

correction.. I just looked and I pull from the front carb and my linkage is level, misses the back carb without any bends. It was a long time ago I did this and didn't remember exactly how it went! With the spoon blocked where I wanted it, I heated the arm (from the pedal outside the firewall) to achieve the pulling linkage being level when at idle.

Speedway sells linkage that will attach both front and rear with a bar and a fitting adjustable on that bar for your throttle arm. Mine are Holley 94's but same linkage will work.

Shorten up your linkage and attach to the rear carb. Then use arms and a link on the drivers side to hook the carbs together.

Here's an example in a car I just put together.

I've used this set up on several cars and they all worked well.

Neal, what steering box are you using on the chassis with the yellow FH? I want to update the steering on my roadster from the original 32 box.

I use a linkage that attaches to the front carb. The carbs are connected by linkage on the driver's side.

Not to hi-jack this but does anyone see any differences in the linkage attaching to the front or rear carb? Just curious.

Original poster, just shorten your linkage cut a thread on the end and put it back together on the rear carb looks easiest.
Ted, dual carbs should be synchronized so either front or back carb is fine. Which ever works for your installation.

Hi,

Is there any advantage on linking two Strombergs on the right side or left? I have an Offenhauser 1005 linkage which is too long. I know I could re-thread the RH thread end but I don't have good luck in threading rods, the thread doesn't stay centered well for me. My carbs are 4 7/8" apart is this linkage is too long. I do have an old linkage that could be mounted to the throttle shaft extensions though and am thinking about using it.

I'm also wondering what I should do about the chokes. Should I link those two together too or just choke on one carb? I have a 32 roadster BTW.

Thanks

I have the choke cable hooked to the rear carb only on my duals and it starts just fine for me.

If the threads will not stay centered on the rod, you may want to get another new die. Do use a good tapping fluid. Make sure the rod is not hardened steel. I have done this several times without any problems. either 10-32 Rh or LH a good machine shop supply store should have the LH die in stock if needed.

Hi Terry,

Well I gave it a try today with fair results. I had a new die but the last part of the thread wandered off center. I used plenty of light oil, watched the perpendicularity and removed the shavings as I went but it still worked itself a little off center. I got the carbs mounted and the Offenhauser linkage adjusted so the two play together well. My first try, I had the set screws on the ends too tight and the linkage bound. I think I'll stay with this but still may go to the old driver side linkage from my pic at some time. It looks like it would allow a little give and may operate smoother too.

Thanks!

Do all of the linkage on the left side. It then is a straight pull to the firewall. No kinks, bends of flexing.
Rework the pedal assembly to line up.
Here is a pic of 3 but just imagine the front carb not there.

Glenn

I have my carbs linked on the driver's side as you can see in this photo I took during construction. I have no problems with this set-up. I hope this helps.

Thanks Pete and sidevalve8ba!

This is the welcome feedback I was looking for. Driver's side, now that I've seen how the right side works, seems like a better and smoother way to go. I'll be doing it.

Today I took off the passenger side linkage and put on the old driver's side that I had that has rod ends on it. It works nice and smooth now. I ordered a couple of new throttle return springs and will clean this up and use it.

Thanks for your help with this.

Glenn

The problem I'm facing is the Linkage ball from the pedal is much higher than the carb's linkage. (Low/no rise Fenton) So the swing of the linkage pulls up before pulling back..? Stretches the Stock link ends right out to the max before moving the carb. Feels terrible driving.
Does anyone think it would help me to be pulling from the front carb? Or would it just be easier to dump the whole thing and put in a pedall assy, with a cable?
Sorry, hope I'm not highjacking? Kind of a noob.
JR.
