8 point sockets

I discovered (thanks to a tip from a mechanic buddy of mine) that you can usually find a 12 point metric socket that will fit tightly on a square nut. I have been successful several times now in this. He said 12 is divisible by both 6 (hex nut/bolt) and 4 (square nut), and he was right. No need to buy additional sockets, if you already have metric.

As James said Sears still has 8 point sockets but not in stores. They need to be ordered. The tie rod sockets also need to be ordered. I use an 8 point with a piece of square bar stock as a differential plug tool. Get a set and have the one you need.

Why not change the rear diierential to a square pipe plug ( similiar to the ****** plug one size smaller) then all you need is an eight adjustable wench Have a Great Day Gord. B by the Bay

A 12 point anything will never have the "grab", or the shoulder grip of a proper 8 point socket, which is purpose designed for a square head bolt. Lots of metric stuff "sorta fits" other applications, but with 80 years of wear, exposure, and corrosion, why chance it for a few bucks to get the right socket? Save yoursrlf some grief, and get the right tool for the job, which is an 8 point socket for a square head bolt.
Be a hero and lend it to your friends after they strip their bolts.

thanks for all the input, went to sears in charlottesville across the mountain and they had the 9/16 eight point needed for the motor teardown.motor now torn completely down, hope it makes it through the magnaflux test.they did not have it in a complete set(8 point sockets).i will order the others online soon.

FWIW... I use a 3/8" ratchet handle with no socket at all on it to remove the differential plug.
