40 convertible rear fenders

Are they different that other passenger cars? Have a friend assembling a 40 convertible for the widow of a friend of ours. He was having trouble with fitting running boards to rear fenders. The only way to make them match is to leave out the very front lowest bolt in the fender, otherwise the fender is "in" about 3/4 inch. She says all parts are what was on the car before it was taken apart for paint. Confusing for sure.

I'm pretty sure all pass. rears are the same, except sedan delevery and p/u. I'm using ones from a tudor on mine, but I haven't installed them yet, so I could be surprised.

Has anyone replaced the quarter panel or did any other body work in this area. Try bolting up everthing loose and then start tightening ,just a sugestion.

At first I thought the one side had suffered some body damage, but both sides are the same. This was a completely finished car that our friend hated the color of and took apart to repaint. He had several 39/40's and we thought that maybe some fenders got mixed? This is a real mystery. My guess is the fenders were never attached with bolt closest to the front, but I can not figure out the fender fit. The fenders appear to match the ones on both my 40's.

There is NO question that all passenger car fenders are the same in 1940. If one is not shaped the same as the other, I'd suggest poor body work was performed at some pint in the past.

You don't recon it could be a Mercury fender do you? I believe they are very similar, but not the same. Not positive, but they do look a lot alike. Hope you figure it out. Joe

I bought a pair of NOS fenders for my 39 Ford standard and the right one looked ok until i went to bolt it on. I found out it was for a 39 Ford panel truck. Marv

The fenders I saw were definitely different, and if a bodyman reshaped a fender he did a great job. So,I would question that they were all the same.

Every Ford parts book and experience with selling fiberglass makes me sure (as sure as anything dealing with a Ford) that all 1940 coupe, convertible, and sedan fenders were the "same". There are differences between the right side and the left side, and the right standard may not have a taillight.

For troubleshooting this convertible see if another fender can be found or borrowed and trial fit. If the fender fits, or does not fit exactly as the other one does not fit, it will clear up if it is a body or fender issue. Note that 1939 coupe, convertible, and sedans and 1938 deluxe sedans also shared the same fender stamping (with differences in taillight).

Thanks for all the responses. I did take a good fender I have and it fit the same way. I am guessing that this car had some rust repair in these areas in the past and the body is no longer contoured correctly there. We have overcome the gap with spacers and the refitting continues. Joe
