wheel stand

I had a post saved from a while ago(pre-Atomic) showing a wheel stand someone had made. Anyone have that saved by chance? Thanks

I don't remember that picture but if you're talking about a wheel stand to paint wheels you need a good solid base, a vertical pipe, a spindle and a front hub with three studs on it. Weld the spindle into the pipe at about a 30 degree angle so you can set a wheel on the hub studs without it falling off. Then you can turn the wheel while you spray paint. You also need a 2' length of 1/4" aluminum rod. Bend the rod into a tight loop on one end and a large hook at the other. Once the wheel is painted and still wet, thread the rod through the valve stem hole until the tight loop sticks into the valve stem hole and lift it off the hub. Carry it over to a large pipe or a 2x2 suspended between 2 saw horses and thread it on. This way if you see a paint run you can turn the wheel 180 degrees to stop the run or change it's direction. I've painted many wheels using this method and it works great.

I made this stand a couple years ago so I could check wheels for trueness and I can also use it to balance wheels with tires mounted. Be sure to allow room for a mounted tire if you want to use the stand for balancing.

I bolted the spindle to the frame using a large bolt through the bottom kingpin hole. This is a good usable spindle, so I didn't want to weld it in place. If I find a junk spindle then I'll bolt that on this stand and put this spindle in my good spare parts box.

Coat the bearings and spindle shaft with light oil so it spins very easily for balancing purposes, and to keep rust away.

Nothing fancy about mine. Is simply clamps on the vice. Rod

Hey Tom. What does the wife think of you sitting on the couch checking your wheels? A cold beer and a pastrami sandwich while watching the speed channel. Life don't get no better than that. My wife is trying to get me to remove the vice and the hack saw i have clamped and hanging on the arm of our couch. But i do have a card board box to catch the shavings.

If you are using for paint here is what I did so I could paint a few at a time front and back.
