The right "sheen" for black parts?

I'm in the process of cleaning up my 34 Ford's engine bay. I want to get a few things powdercoated for a nice uniform finish. My question is, how glossy? Should it be satin? Should it be gloss? Should it be flat? What's appropriate? I want to do the fan, air cleaner and a few other random pieces when I freshen up the paint on the engine.

I could be wrong, but I believe the correct sheen is a semi-flat. There is a difference between semi-flat and semi-gloss. Hard to explain, but if you saw two sample panels next to one another, you'd see it right away.

The paint on the specific parts that you mention was close to gloss judging from NOS parts and period Ford Archives photos. The same goes for oil pans, spark plug wire conduits, engine splash pans, and oil filler tubes. Starters and generators often had a lower gloss level.

Thanks Dave. I was very apprehensive to address this question. I have been in the past figuratively "stoned" for stating the truth as you have done today.

Thanks guys! I'll go with a little more shine when I do the parts. I have a NOS oil filler tube, I'll take that in to match the gloss level.

We use Eastwood's "chassis black". Always remember that lacquer is fuel proof, and ordinary enamel will dissolve.

Well, I'm gonna powdercoat, so I'm good. Eastwood also has two finishes of chassis black, I've got both of those. Thanks for the input though!

After looking over some parts, David and Kube are right. I was thinking of '60's muscle cars when I said semi-flat.

Another reason why Fordbarn is great resource!
