troubleshooting starter noise

I have to remove my starter and start and run my car without the starter attached.

Will oil spew out of the opening if I remove the starter and run the car for a short time?

Re: troubleshooting strater noise

No, there is no possibility of an oil leak with the starter removed. Don't forget to hook the battery cable back up to the wire to the terminal box, so that you have ignition power.

Frank,

Even though I hold a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a M.S. in Computer Science, I too struggle with literal english language.. C / C++ programming or Python programming languages are easy for me. A quick look at my posts will show dozens of spelling and or grammer errors. Not everyone is gifted with this skill naturally, so hang in there.. All the best.

Last year, upon starting my coupe, I heard the most horrendous noise that I tracked to the starter. What happened was the ring gear shifted and was grinding on a too-long starter bolt. I tapped the ring gear back into place (there are other threads on this problem), installed the proper length bolts and the problem was solved..... at least until the next time the ring gear slips.
