Fan woes?

I've got a slight problem with a fan.

The fan is a 4 blade steel fan, I think a repro. Its mounted on what I believe is a repro water pump.

I'm planning on ripping the fan off and installing an aluminum 2 blade asap.

However I noticed the main reason the fan is rattling around is it seems to fit really loose on the water pump shaft. I can't see this being normal.

Is there a known reason for this? I was under the impression the fan pressed pretty tightly onto the shaft and was actually hard to remove at times.

Thanks.

You may have worn or mismatched tapers on either part or both, it is not a good nor acceptable condition.

I would worry about the fan being loose. It should fit tight on the shaft and there is also a small key. Is it possible that the nut is bottoming out before the fan is snug? Maybe a washer would solve the problem. Maybe the shaft is undersize or the fan is oversize (love those repros).

many old repro pump shafts were tapered wrong. You might need to replace it as well as the fan, both of which are probably ruined by now.

I was told they were installed around 10 years ago. Is this what you mean by "old repro" ??

I would agree this is an unacceptable condition. It sounds terrible. And usually when something mechanical sounds terrible, it is terrible.

Mr Tube,
I just removed the org.steel two bladed fan and replaced it with a alum. two bladed one and it was a pain getting the old one off, i did have to lean the rad. fwd. and hit the old fan pully with a hammer and a 6in 3/8 ext. but it finley came off, the new one went on pretty easy [but tight]. my water pump is org. also, good luck.

Don't think i'm gonna have that problem. I think once I lean the radiator and take the belt off if I breath on it its gonna slide off :D.

Any recommendations on a water pump for a driver?? I was thinking a leakless with the fake grease fittings.

MrTube: Do a search, there was a long discussion here a few days ago about the different style water pumps available, very informative.

I've only had my 31 a little over a year and i haven't had any problems with it leaking, and it's a very old one, im pretty sure it's org. i did one time loosen the nut and lub. it a couple of pumps with the G gun and retighten, thats been 4 mo's ago and no leaks. i don't know anything about the new one's, i do know the old one's work fine for me.

An original pump doesn't need to leak if the install is done correctly and with minimum fore and aft play shaft to head. There should be .006 clearance/play only.

I agree and the pump in my 28 is one I rebuilt exactly as original. I rebuilt it 10 years ago and have been using it in my 28 for the past 4 years. It has never leaked a drop in all that time, and I haven't touched the brass adjustment nut since the day I installed it. I used the lead packing rings with a lot of grease smeared on them, tightened the nut, ran the engine for 1/2 hour and retightened the nut, and haven't tightened it since.

The only thing I'll do different on all future rebuilds is I'll use the rear bushing with the double lip seal, to better keep the grease from entering the coolant.

I wish I had an original pump to work with. However it seems the 2 people who originally maintained this truck trashed anything they replaced. And everything they touched was wrong so far.

I started with an A whos throttle would not open more then half way, and whos timing was so retarded it wouldn't run atall unless the timing was fully advanced at idle.

Now the A will do 55 and idle near perfectly. Currently fixing the headlight nightmare and now this fan rattle issue. Nothing like doing work you can be proud of, eh?

Where can I get a pump, or at least a pump shaft I know is good?

Any of the quality oriented suppliers will have rebuild kits with new shafts. Get one from the same place you get the new 2 blade fan. Check the fit before assembling. If it does not fit, you can return it (or them) for another. If you want an original core, Bert's is your best bet. There are now available new repro castings which I hear are good, but I have no experience with them. Perhaps someone here who has one will chime in.

if you want a leakless with modern bearings, check out the recent thread on leakless pumps.

Looking at buying a new shaft with impeller pressed and pinned on. Seems like a good idea right now.

From what I can tell the shaft isn't keyed at all? So the fan and pully just press onto it?
I would assume that means ours is very likely spinning on the shaft quite a bit?

In case you need any additional encouragement to dump that repro 4-blade:

OK I just received a shaft for the pump today. Fits perfect with a 1 piece aluminum 2 blade fan I have that is also new.

The pump in the A is an original type repro from 10 years ago, very little use on it. From what I can tell all I need to do is loosen the packing nut and the shaft should slide right out the back of the pump? Then I slide the new one in, tighten the packing nut no more then necessary, and bolt her up and i'm good to go?

I'm going to clean things up but I want to be sure I have an understanding of the basic nature of the beast.
