I have to remove the fuel tank from my 1931 Coupe and really don't know where to start. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am studying the section in the Les Andrews book. Any parts I should order beforehand? Thank you in advance.
Hi oldbike99.
My name is Les. Pearson and I write and distribute Model 'A' Ford technical manuals.
"The Complete Model 'A' Ford Restoration Manual' gives you all the info required to remove and install your fuel tank.
Books can be purchased from most leading Parts vendors.
Cheers,
Les.
Welting is not as hard as you think. You cut 12” heavy canvas about 1 wide. Staple the strips to the back side of the welting every 2”. When you
reinstall the fixed tank you place the welting in place and let the strips hang
down behind the tank and the firewall and cowl side wall. You move the tank to its final position and then pull on each strip to make the welting snug. Install the tank fasteners and make adjustments to the welting by pulling down or sideways for final fit. Tighten the tank fasteners and cut the canvas strips that are hanging down. You can achieve a very neat fit
of the webbing with this method. My best for your project.
Just finished reinstalling my 31 coupe tank today. My recommendation is to get a buddy to help at least to set the tank back in and to reinstall the windshield. The cloth strips are essential, don't forget the anti squeak tape. It takes about 3+hrs both ways. Use the adapter to attach the steering column to the dash rail when you go back. Good luck
I did this job just last year on my Cabriolet. The tank is different so my removal and installation process would not help you much. (My tank is under the cowl rather than part of it. After removing several bolts, it drops down to the floor boards and out.)
However, consider this to repair the seeping column support. I removed the bracket completely, ground what was left of the rivets flush, and welded them in place. To finish up, I had a radiator repair shop coat the inside with sealer. And of course a re-paint was needed. The column is now supported with the later '31 style bracket. And there was only one of me!
