'48 Super Deluxe gauge reads negative

My dash gauge when charging reads negative and I can't figure out to reverse this false reading problem. It's a one wire connection, so how can it be connected wrong? Could it be a polarizing problem and if so how do you correct it.

If its an Ammeter you are talking about, I have some difficulty in visualizing it having only one wire going to it.

If it's like mine in my '38, the wire goes through a loop and continues on without actually connecting to that gage. In that case, simply disconnect the wire and run it through the loop in the opposite direction. Ask me why and I'll refer you to Nikola Tesla.

It's like all Ford amps from '33-53...wire goes though an inductive loop on back. You need to take off the wire where it goes to circuit braker so you can pass it through the loop the other way!
Either wire was sent through in wrong direction, or car has been changed over to negative ground.

True ampere charge indicators do have two wires and one of the wires is generally shunted either by wire length for resistance or with an actual shunt device. I don't recall FoMoCo using this type of a system after the model A & B days. A volt meter would have been a better choice in my opinion.

Why would anything under the dash have more than one wire? The dash itself is the other half of the circuit.
Did not say anything under the dash, 'ammeter' is what is being talked about. Any ammeter that I have seen other than the stock inductive type meter has two wires and neither is grounded.
