Lifters?

What can a person do when the lifter holes in the block are worn oblong? You can only buy 5/1000 over and I have about 25 over. Do you bore it and sleeve it? Any suggestions?

TIA
Hank

Hank - I apologize that I do not have an answer. I hope someone on the Fordbarn can; however I am wondering how such a condition came to be, and I hope someone can answer that too. The reason I am curious is I have not heard of such wear before.

It is relatively easy to bore the lifter holes in the block.
It is not so easy to get oversize lifters.
I have done several blocks and ended up modifying Mopar 6 cyl.
lifters to fit. They are easy to modify but hard to find the right ones.
I think next time I would make lifters from scratch.

Some years ago I talked with a guy that had considerable wear in the lifter bores of his Model-A block and used lifters from an early Ford 6-cylinder flathead as replacements. He told me that, with a slight amount of oversize boring, they fit perfectly. Maybe somebody here can comment on this.

The info on which 6 cyl is lost in the archives on the old barn, posted in 2003 or 2004. This was some of the info I was trying to locate before the old barn died. The archives for that time frame were unusable and have not yet been restored to the new barn. Thought it was the late 40's G-6, but there may have been a couple of different versions of that lifter. The easiest way to locate lifters to use is go to a parts store and look through their progressive size charts.
You find there are many that will have bodies larger than the reamed size
of the hole. These must have the body ground to fit the hole.
This is what I did. This way you do not have to use new lifters but it does make the search for used ones more interesting.
New ones are 6 bucks each, used ones are free.
You could have a special reamer made so you could use unmodified lifters but here again, is it cost effective for one job?
Another thing, all of the lifters I found that would work, needed the head diameter turned down. Another machining step.
Lots of ways to do the job..It depends on your resources.

Egge Machine used to advertise oversize"A" lifters. I don't have a current catalog.

@Ron, that was the condition of the bore when I bought the engine. Didn't realize it until I started it. It's just a junk diamond B engine. I purchased a reamer from mcmaster carr tonight.
So we will see how that works out. Thanks for all the replys

Hello Hank/MI : This is what I did on my "B" motor build. Lifters are Chrysler 6 cylinder adjustable from : Terrill Machine Inc. 1000 County Road 454, DeLeon TX. 76444 254.893.2610
Stock lifter bore "B" .593 ( 19/32" ) this will have to be reamed to .625 ( 5/8" ) The larger foot on the Chrysler lifter of 1.292 compared to stock "B" lifter 1.186 did not pose any problems. The Chrysler lifter is .345 taller that the stock "B" lifter. Gary in MN

It took me 2 days but I finally found the pic of the setup I used to machine the lifter bores.

Rowdy, I just noticed that Snyders is now offering oversize double lock lifters. Look on page A 118 part number A 6500 DLOS . These lifters are .005 oversize and list for $6.75 each or $51.95 per set. I don't know about the size of the foot of these lifters, this will really be the important factor. All of the double lock lifters that I have ever seen, that were made for the model A, had a smaller base than the single lock style.Might be worth a try call (330) 549-2211 for info. The 51 Ford lifters may be better, but are probably as scarce as hens teeth

Will check on that as I need the B size foot dia. also trying to locate the set Pete mentioned. I have some decent used b lifters, but one short of a full set. I may contact Egge and see if just the dbl locks can be bought and trim these down for use in the daimond block with very little wear. Thanks Rod
