you should use a "rim spreader" - a 3 legged screw jack sort of thing that is mainly used to spread the rim back into the tire when re-assembling the rim. Most of them also have hooks on the 3 legs that allow you to pull the rim into a smaller diameter to remove the tire. There is a joint in the rim with a locking device to hold it together once in its operating position.
to remove the tire, remove the rim from the wheel, let out all of the air, undo the locking device, place one leg of the spreader near the joint - on the side that should be obviously meant to slip inside the other side, pull the rim small enough to remove the tire - no more.
reassemble in reverse order, a flap is a good idea as the joint is very apt to pinch the tube on assembly & is a point that wears the tube in use. It sometimes is a good idea to lightly inflate thr tire then ,mount the rim on the wheel before bringing it up to full pressure - (35 psi).
a bent rim is not uncommon & can be very frustrating. You can change these tires without a rim spreader but it usualy involves tire irons, bars, screw drivers, extra patches & band-aids. Impressionable young children should not be exposed to the process!
