Rubber Floor Mat Instl. 1930 Tudor

Were snaps on the inside of the firewall just for carpet or were they also used for the rubber floor mats?
I have a 1930 Tudor which has the male snap half in at least two locations on the inside of the firewall. I finished trimming the front rubber floor mat and the snaps seem like they keep the mat from lying flat. I think that snaps in the rubber floor mat material would probably tear out pretty quickly.
Perhaps these cars were delivered with carpet installed and that would explain the snaps but I am not aware of anything like that.
Were the snaps used for the rubber floor mat or should they be removed?
Thanks.

i use the snaps for the rubber floormats
and i believe the mats are marked to cut out for them

I do not have snaps for the rubber mat in my Double A, if there were, the mat would have to be stretched to reach them,

I have the remains of an original 30 rubber floor mat (pictured) and it had holes at the 3 highest points at the top of the mat to push the male snap through. The top right hole has disappeared, but there is a stud in the floor in exactly the right place for this purpose. This is a RHD mat, but I expect the LHD would have been exactly the same.

RHD,
Your picture is worth a thousand words. Do you think that the snaps pushed thru the mat and had something that then attached to them or maybe the snaps were secured to the mat? In my car they do seem to be a little high. I measured the diameter of the post in the car and they were .270 inch dia. I know that my car has two of the posts; one near the starter and one on the RH side. I need to check for the third post.

Hi Rex.
The studs had a small raised area on the top to stop them from coming free. The stud always seemed a little high. Nothing fitted to or over the stud.
Cheers,
Les.

I believe that original rubber mats were made a little thicker in the area where it went over the retainer........

Mitch,

I have a new floor mat I got at Bert's in early Nov and the stud positions are not indicated on it.

My '30 Tudor has four studs.

Thanks to Rex for posting this question, as I was planning to do so myself. Now I know what to do!

My pickup rubber mat has holes that go over the snap stud. My coupe carpet have female snaps that snap over the studs. Without looking the holes in the rubber mat are about 1/4".

The floor mat snap stud has an upper diameter of .390 inch. The body of the stud is .250 inch. The height of the stud from the firewall is .350 inch and the thickness of the rolled upper edge is about .080 inch. Might have to experiment with a good hole size but it seems that .312 inch dia. might be a good choice.
It appears that the location of the center of the studs can be marked on the bottom of the floor mat by going thru the center of the stud from the engine compartment.
My 1930 Tudor only has two studs; one on the RH side near the choke rod and one near the starter.

Original rubber floor mats had fabric vulcanized around each hole on the back side. This reinforced it so the rubber wouldn't tear. If we could still buy hot patches I'd try to vulcanize a smaller diameter piece of fabric between the rubber mat and patch. I might have to try to do something similar with a glue patch. Just cut the hole so it pushes tightly over the floor stud.

The mats should be marked but very, very, very faintly. Just shine a light at an angle along the edges and you should see the marks. Don't ask how long it took me to find them.

There were four mat studs along the bottom of the firewall on all left hand drive models. If you can't locate two holes where the studs came out then someone plugged the holes.
