gas tank filler neck

59 Edsel, had to replace the gas tank. There are no new ones so I had to order one for a 61-64 Galaxie and alter it. The filler neck is the largest hurdle. The Galaxie one has a larger diameter neck and is shorter than the Edsel. The fix I propose is to cut the Edsel neck off and extend the one on the Galaxie tank by attaching it with a rubber plumbing reducing adapter. I'm not sure (doubt) the plumbing adapter is rated for fuel alcohol contact.

thoughts?

thanks

it wont work, but you can buy the right stuff at most parts stores, its used on most cars to attach the gas fill pipe to the fuel tank, all you need to do is get the measurement and length of the pipe you need, the go to your local muffler shop and buy a piece of stainless steel exhaust pipe the same size as the original fill pipe, then have the muffler shop stretch the other end, yes they can do that, to the size of the neck on your new tank, then buy a short piece of the gas proof hose to put the two pieces of the pipe together using a couple of clamps, you can also cut the original pipe to save the gas cap piece and add it to the new stainless steel pipe with another piece of the gas proof hose

I don't know how long a section of rubber hose you need, but the plumbing stuff is probably not rated for fuel, and will probably deteriorate and end up in the fuel tank and lines , possibly the carb. causing a lot of headaches. see if you can find a hose for a pick-up with an in cab tank and external filler ( think 53-56 ford p/u) or possibly a passenger car where there is a rubber hose between the filler neck in the fender/ quarter panel and the tank neck. I could not find the correct one for my 51 Merc. several years ago and used one off of a 56 Ford p/u. I had to trim a bit off. you might also try a hyd hose vendor. they may be able to find something that is fuel resistant and the right diameter and they can cut to any length you want. the problem may be finding one that is flexible enough. your other choice would be ck wrecking yards for possible donors and then ck and see if there is a reproduction, or nos nose avalible that you can make fit. a little long winded, but I hope this helps, or gives you some ideas.

if you use the rubber couplers from the hardware store its illegal, and will detereat quickly, those are made for water, not fuel

NAPA has very large (2"?) truck neoprene fuel lines that allows you to buy just as much as you need; cut to length. I had the same problem using a Ford gas tank in a '58 Ranger. Simply cut the neck, protect the now un-coated metal at the saw cut edge and use hose clamps to secure. Has the advantage of being able to custom fit the filler neck. Used the same stuff on my '51 Victoria to replace the deteriorated rubber on the two piece filler neck.

As stated above any place that makes hoses should have what you need if not a boat supply or marina should have what you need i had a problem with an older jeep p/u i had also with my wagon

I got the fuel hose at NAPA today. 26 bucks worth =[. Anyhow, hopefully by this time tomorrow, I will have the tank mounted and running.

thanks again

I used the original straps. The new tank is roughly the same length as the old just wider.
I'm going to make a new thread on the swap but I didn't make pics of the process like I should. =[ I was just trying to get done. It took me several hours.
