1931 PU speedometer cable

I ordered a new cable from Bratton's and am ready to install it.

Before I dive into it I was hoping maybe someone could give me some information on what i'm getting in to.

Does the replacement cable fit everything properly? Where does it connect to on the transmission, is it usually rusted and hard to remove and so on.

The cable drive is on the bottom of the torque tube just aft of the universal joint cover. It is generally quite wet from grease and oil so removal of the cable should be no problem. If you have a problem removing the speedometer cable assembly, you can remove the cable drive by removing the two attachment bolts. I recently installed a Bratton's supplied cable in my Briggs 155B and it fit as intended. Gar Williams

Mr. Tube (fitting some how seeings as you are headed to the torque tube) Some aftermarket replacement cables will come with a "Pill" to install if the keyed end slips past the drive gear slot for the earlier cars. I only mention this because you never know which drive has been installed on the tube in the past. I ignored this piece and found the stamped keyed end could slip passed the keyway and the cable would not spin. I installed the pill and all was good. All depends on which cable and drive assembly you have. Take a rag with you and good luck.

I got the cable from a smaller supplier but I believe they just by from the bigger guys anyway. The Pill for the Keyhole type cable wasn't much (sorry I didn't take a mug shot) and you could easily make one with a nail abot the same diameter of the cable end. All you need is a piece long enough to prevent the cable from slipping past the key slot, and short enough not to bind the cable. (1/4"-3/8" Long?)
