I have a leak from the right rear of the case of the transmission. It looks like an expansion plug maybe. I don't see anything on internet searches that give me an idea what it is. Can anyone give me a clue before I try to tap it with a hammer and punch to try to seal it to stop the leak?

thanks

I have one those trannys in my storage shed i will try to see that area on mine tomorrow and see what it might be. that is the best I can do now 0k?

btw the best repair i ever got on a gas tank is I bought a new one. Bob Drake ford parts found it for me if that will help your tank leak ....... well sure it hurt my wallet but it don't leak

I bought a new tank from Auto City Classics. Its for a 61-64 Galaxie. It will have to be modified to fit but its the closest I can get. I think the filler tube will have to be extended and the fuel line hooks up different.

thanks for looking the plug up on the ******. It was wet with fluid there, but since has stopped. I'm not sure where my leak is but I'm going to have to redo the pan gasket it looks like. I straightened the pan where it had been over torqued but I still have a leak.

Hey we edsel people have to stick together lol you are welcome for what little i did. let me know if there s anything you might need in edsels; have 4 not the graveyard hill so might be able to find something needed i am actually working on a 58 ranchero so edsels are kinda taking the back burner

unclevinny did you ever see an early 58 edsel with coluum shift.i scraped one a few years ago and have have heard of others so i guess their not that rare.

I have one that is an Aug '57 build. The story I have heard is that Ford ran short on some parts early on and ended up using Mercury columns for something like 300 cars. Mine is a Ranger (cheapie) so maybe they used them on some low dollar cars for a bit.

The aluminum 2 speed transmission was first used in 1959 and only used in big cars for a couple of years or so. It is a completely different transmission from the earlier cast iron 3 speeds so comparing to a '58 doesn't work.

yes it was used only on cheapie edsels until the end of 57 im told.mine was built in aug,as well but people have said they were used of and on until jan 58.

I wish I could trouble someone for pics of the interior welting and the door seals so I can look for the right replacements. I would like to buy a defroster vent or a picture of one so I can try to make one from scratch. I think mine had one inlet and 6 outlets? (demanding aren't I?)
I have had mine for about a month and every time I take one step forward I take two backwards. This is also my first old car to restore. The previous owner did a great deal of work on it but died before he finished or even got to drive it. So there are some parts that are just missing and I have not idea what some of them looked like.
I hope I can lean on you guys that have one!

thanks for your interest

The old Ford-o-matics had a "park plug" on the rear face, drivers side of the transmission case. The plug resembles a very small freeze plug. I got a Ford-o-matic back from the shop years ago and it started blowing fluid out all over the highway. It took forever to figure out where the leak was coming from, because it wouldn't leak just sitting with the engine idling. Suddenly, I noticed that the "Park plug" was GONE. Apparently the rebuilder did not properly tap the plug in or forgot to install it.

as a matter of fact i never did see the stick shift I had heard it was on some models and through the forum i will check my complete library of the Edsel Monthly news!!! and see if i can read up on the strange critters. i will look and see if i have the defroster vents will be the 2nd of march before i get down to the Edsel Hill Top though Like I always said I am very slow but i do sloppy work!!

Edsel update! Its alive! Actually got to drive it for the first time today. I have had one set back after another since Jan. 17th when I bought it, but I got the gas tank in and drove it with my lovely bride for 4 or 5 miles. I decided not to push my luck and didn't go any further.
On the transmission, I read that to save money, Edsel dropped the push button ****** and offered the lever operated ones in '59 and '60. I wish it had a three speed. It will take some getting used to as I kept listening for it to shift. It did but at a much higher speed than I would have thought. I don't know what speed because the speedometer is dead. I am just ordering the speedo gear tonight.
I can post what was involved in the gas tank swap if anyone is interested.

Thanks

Yes I would be very interested in how to swap the gas tanks with a 61-64 which are readily available. I have a '59 Edsel Ranger 2 door HT which I hope to start doing stuff to this spring. Also the transmission indicator lens indicates that mine has the 2 speed auto like yours. When it comes to the running gear, I am semi-purist (but not quite 100%) so I'll probably spend the big bucks to have it overhauled when I can find the right person to do it.
