U-Joint Problem?

I've got a clutch issue and have pulled the rear end. I notice that there are grooves on ends of each of the U-Joint cross (see picture). Is this an indication of a problem? I'd just as soon address it now while everything is disassembled.

Remove the U-joint and clean it up.

Then detect to see if there is any slop in the part itself in the area where the rivets are holding it together.

Look see if there is any metal filelings in the grease within the cavity.

More than likely what you are seeing are machine marks when the part was made...hopefully!

Any "gouging" on the U-joint housing cap---inner?

If everything was put together right, there should be no slop anywhere.

It may be that the bolt and special washer that attaches the U-joint to the transmission shaft may be the problem.

Just throughly check things our all around.

Pluck

May be a dumb question but, is this the way your U-joint looked when you pulled it? Or is this after cleaning all the grease off ?

If your talking about the flats visible on the male part in the bores, that is factory for lubrication purposes.

I am referring to the parallel ridges on the round ends of the cross. All 4 ends look the same.

Machining marks, nothing to worry about. Take the U-joint off and check for play, a very slight, almost indiscernible amount, is normal. Any more than that, and it can make noise or add to the driveline slack.
