Y Block Valley Pan Breather

Hi to all! I'm new to the forum and also new to the world of the Y block motor. I have tried searching for the answer to the question I have but keep coming up with a blank so any help would be appreciated.

I recently purchased a 1961 Galaxie with 292 motor to run around with this summer while my 1978 F100 undergoes a frame off rebuild. The plans for the galaxie is to clean it up and get it running better. Like I said it has a used and abused (but running) 292 2 barrel motor. The rear breather that should be on the Valley pan with a screw is gone as well as the road draft tube. My question is; Where can I find a replacement breather?? I have read about guys blocking off the breather hole and installing a PCV valve into the valley pan. Is there already adapter to do this or do I have to fabricate a set up for this? I'm trying to go low budget on the Galaxie so I can save money for the F100. Thanks

you can buy a pcv kit and install it in that hole.cant think who sells one but others will soon tel you.

Hey Fleck,

Go here to this website and make a post in their classifieds section. Somebody is bound to have something out there to help you.

I did something to my valley pan that used Ford parts and put a PCV system together... about $20 total when it was all done. I got a couple of things from Bob's F100 out in California. If you send me your email address, I can send you an article I did about PCV and the Y block...

Tinker I never thought about LMC Truck. I deal with them alot for my 78 F100.

Thanks

No kit needed, it costs about five bucks for parts. I drill the welds out of the part that holds the threads for the vertical screw in, just to make more room. I use a punch to hammer the bottom down a bit too, the PCV needs to fit down in the hole without bottoming and shutting itself off. Then glue in a grommet for a 302 rocker cover, and buy a PCV for an engine with similar cubic inch size. Run a 3/8 vacuum hose to a similar sized source. Make sure the oil fill cap has a clean filter in it, that is now the intake.

Just to show how many inventions are possible - this is a threeway copper water fitting -JB welded onto a flat washer - and then sealed down to the valley cover with a bolt through a selection of leftover grommets. The PCV is from a '64 292 truck stuck into the 90° leg of the fitting with more left-over grommets - and the hose is screw clamped over the screw threads of the suction end of the PCV. Works.......

Due to the lack of orfices in this stack-up (present in the OEM system), it allowed too much air flow and the PCV acted like a vacuum leak until I put a restrictor in the hose. I thought using the 292 truck part would do the trick all by its lonesome - but its too free flowing when installed as I started out.

Thanks for the responses. My niehbor/ fellow hot rodder figured out a way to reuse the old breather hole to retrofit a pcv valve. Have to stop at the hardware store to get a few parts and this project should be done. Thanks again for the insight.

If has been used and abused as you said, might need to go to a hotter spark plug. Putting a bunch of blow-by through the intake may foul out a normal heat range plug. The last number on the Autolite plug is the heat range. So, if you are using 45, go to 46, etc.

A very simple solution to the missing draft tube is to convert the 292-312 engine to a PCV system from a '63-64 Ford F100/350 pickup.
The Ford pickups had a neat adapter that attached to the opening in the valley cover with a 1/4" bolt.. Attach a hose to the fitting with a PCV, correct size for the CID of the engine, attach the hose to a vacuum port in the manifold.. You can also use the Ford style of PCV which threads into the manifold..Make sure the fill tube cap is a breathable style, so that air can be drawn into the crankcase, and out, via the PCV.
I have converted all of my Y-blocks to the '63-64 Ford system.. Works great..
If you have a commercial vehicle, i.e. F100, etc. it will have a ventilator can on the lower left side of the block.. Remove the can, put a block-off plate over the hole in the block, either replace the can, or discard it.. If I want to keep the engine stock looking, I put the can back on over the block-off plate..

Thanks for all the help. I wound up pulling the manifold and valley pan. Knocked out the threaded boss. Reinstalled the pan and manifold. I found a perfect fit PCV grommet. I originally hooked it to manifold vacuum but since I'm not ging for thee stock thing I will be installing a Holley 2 barrel with a PCV port tomorrow. I forgot to bring the part#'s home. I will post them tomorrow.

Maybe this will help some one down the road. The pcv valve grommet is from "Help" #42324 and the pcv valve is from NAPA #2-9200. I also switched to a Holley 2 Barrel carb with a pcv port. The set up is working great so far
