Y-block fuel pump... doesn't pump

I posted this on the HAMB as well - http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=532037

And I got some feedback to post it over here and get ken ct to weigh in.

What is a good source for a replacement diaphragm? And, to paraphrase the other post, does a diaphragm fuel pump slowly become less effective as it is failing or does it just stop one day? My pump has very little pressure and no volume, but the diaphragm doesn't appear to be ruptured.

Thanks,
Ken

not knowing how old the pump is it might not be compatable with the newer fuel. Take this opportunity to chang all the hoses with more modern compatable with the newer fuel.
If I remember right the same pump is used on the FE motors. I also found a pump that didn't have the tubes for the vacum wipers. I think it was from a y block used in a boat. and it had the spin on filter on the lower part of the pump. Good luck. Gerry

as the check valves in the pump become worn they will not hold or pump the fuel to the carb, one valve lets the fuel in the pump while the one that lets the fuel go to the carb is closed, when the valve to carb opens the suction valve going to the tank closes, if either one is weak the pressure to carb will drop, and it does happen slowly, if the diafram fails it will either pump fuel into the oil pan or not pump at all

as far as getting superior replacement parts contact KenCT, he posts on here alot, uses only usa made replacement parts, they work

great replies, thank you. Gerry - I want to retain the vacuum wipers, at least for now, but I have seen that FE pumps work on the Y-Block as well.

Ford1 - I'm going to pull the pump again tonight and bench test it some more and then probably change my oil as the fuel has to have been going somewhere.

Possibly the check valves have deteriorated with age and fuel problems, and will not seal, looseing prime & pressure.

speedway sell a replacement pump for the y block it does'nt have the vacuum ports but works great i have been through 5 electric pumps before installing it on my 292 merc with a small edelbrock 4 bbl

I had poured some gas back down the tube leading to the carb in hopes that it would refresh the seals if they were dry. I let it sit in there overnight and pulled the fuel pump to inspect it last night. It pumped on the bench, so I reinstalled it and it started pumping! Hooked it up to the carb and she fired right up!

I guess the check valves were just dry? Everything inside the pump looked spotless when I pulled it apart, so I think I'll change the oil and look for gas, then drive for a bit and check again.

Thanks for the help.

Valves in pumps do NOT get dry. Most are a phonolic material and dont absorb gas or oil. Though some valve discs are coated with a rubber type coating, these will be eaten up by this alchol in todays gas in short order. This type of slightly larger valve body and or if they are pressed in to the pumps are NOT REPLACEABLE.Word to the wise. ken ct.
