Wood wheel maintenance

What do you all recommend putting on wood wheels to help preserve them?

I heard in the past, kerosene should be used. I was at Home Depot to get some and they now sell a "kerosene substitute" (for kerosene heaters). Reading the label made me think this might not be the right thing to put on the wood spokes to help preserve them.

I thought I would see what folks here recommend.

I use boiled linseed oil thinned 60%-70% with turpentine on wood.
