Wisconsin title questions.

My uncle needs more space for his old tractors so he wants me to buy his 20 Model T truck. He wants to keep it in the family so he is selling it to me for a very reasonable price. The problem is it has no title. My grandfather had it before him and they were both content to play with it on the farm. I live in town and I would like to be able to drive it out of my garage from time to time. The title is long gone. I don't even know who my grandfather bought the car from. My question is, is there an easy way to obtain a title for an antique car like this. I have heard that the state of Wisconsin is not easy to work with. I know that there is no body number on these early cars so at least I don't have to explain why the numbers do not match. How do the hot rodders title their cars when they start with a basic body tub? Could I use that same process? I am new to this forum but I figured that this was probably the best place to start.

Im in Two Rivers, and started out with a chassis/speedster project that came with a BOS only. I bought a different title and transferred that with no problem. I run it as is and all the cops wave to me and give me thumbs up. You cant do a decent phony number job to match the title numbers on the motor (original location) or stamp new numbers on the frame somewhere. Like a 30 year old cop is gonna know where the numbers are on a 100 year old vehicle?
Its not like we are some gangsta's with the 500 watt boxes and purple lights under a stolen car. It called the mother of necessity. The story goes that these guys were so heavily modified over the years that most parts have been exchanged and nothing matches anymore. My humble opinion...
Try taking pops to the DMV and bring an ownership affidavit (notorized) along and see where that goes. More than likely an expensive can of worms...

Go to your DMV and inquire about Hobbyist and Collector registration applications. In Louisiana we can title off BOS with a State Police check of motor number that vehicle is not stolen and over 25 old. Philip

Wisconsin is pretty much the same, however, they want the vehicle appraised by a real appraiser, then you post a "performance bond" which is 10% of the appraisal for 5 years. No claims against it and its refunded, of course without any interest etc. Kinda like Osama care but different.
I can understand if you have a 2012 Benz without a title, but a barn find with no wheels on it? What ever you do DO NOT try to 'splain it to La'Koonya at the DMV. That will only complicate matters!
The saving grace was however, that along with an SASE, the state will return the original title as an antique document with a red VOID stamped on it. . Wisconsin started issuing titles in 1932 tho... which is what mine was issued as with a 1925 date of manufacturing.
ADVICE??? Buy another title, tag it, and everytime that you see a cop, make your presence know... I blow the ahooga horn at them all the time! Little towns are different... where ya from?? ws

Thanks for the advice Yacht. I am not too far from you. I live in Chilton. I am in no big hurry. I talked to someone else today who gave me about the same advice as you have. You can be sure that there is no way I am going to try to explain this to the friendly people at the DMV. I guess that I was hoping that there was a way to do this similar to what the kit car builders do. Or a way to do it through the police department. I would much rather deal with them than the DMV.
