wire splice

Redoing my headlights and found a mess of bare wires and electrical tape - yukk. Anyway, I was thinking of replacing the wire harness but once outside the condiut and all the way to the switch everything is fine, including the switch. I cut the wires back to where they are good, just about where they go into the condiut, and now need to splice in new ones that lead up to the lights. I want to make the splice as small as possible so I can slip new wire loom over the splice. I was thinking of soldering on the new wires then covering the splice with two layers of heat shrink and sliding on the loom. My question; is the heat shrink enough to insulate the wires to prevent them from contacting each other and shorting out. Any other ideas?
Thanks :D

Mort,
I got some stuff called Liquid Tape that I've used for leads in my gen. and it seems to work great. It paints on and thickens up looking like seamless electrical tape. Maybe then put your shrinkwrap over that.

It would be airtight and you cant beat that!!

I would use a single layer of internal adhesive-lined polyolefin or nylon shrink and stagger the splices to keep the diameter down. The adhesive melts and flows, weather sealing the connection as it shrinks. Less mess than trying to shrink dry tube over paint on vinyl that will out-gas and bubble when heated. Avoid the shiny vinyl shrink plastic. It has little cut-through resistance. Just my opinion.
