Windsor, Y Block Bellhousing Question??

I have a mate in Australia that is working on a Drag-U-La tribute. He has a F100 3 Speed Manual Trans that was connected to a Y Block. He still has the Y Block Bell Housing.

His plans are to mate it to a 302 Windsor.

Would you think a 351 Windsor Truck Bell Housing for a 3 Speed would be sufficient? Or is there a passenger car equivalent?

I know the 302C and 351C in Australia are the same deck. So they have some interchangeable parts. I know for example that my 302C in my 75 XB Falcon Ute would accept a 28 Spline Toploader in place of the Single Rail Toploader already in the ute.

The truck gearbox will have a stump puller 1st gear. The bottom bolts will bolt up to the housing if a top loader was fitted and will probably need two holes drilled and tapped for the top. It may be too short by about 3/8" from bell housing to spigot bearing. A Customline gearbox would be a better option though that will have the same issues with input shaft length.
You are better off to use use a gearbox that will mount without mod to the bell housing. You will confuse a lot on this forum using the term single rail top-loader. This is a BorgWarner four speed gearbox used in Australia that has the gear lever mounted to the extension housing with a rail connecting into the gearbox shift levers internal. These gearbox shifters were rubber mounted to eliminate vibration. If you were too heavy handed shifting it was not unusual to end up with the gearshift lever snapped off in your hand.

Did you mean to say 302C and that the 302 and 351 have the same deck height? In the USA, there is no 302C; perhaps that is unique to Australia. The 302W and 351W have different deck heights but share bell housing bolt patterns. The 351C has a different bell housing that is the same as the 400M. If there is such a beast as a 302C in Australia then maybe it is the same as the 351C bolt pattern and will not fit to the 351W. The 302 Boss is a 302W with 351C style heads but retains the 302W bell housing bolt pattern.

All that to say this. The Windsor bell housing will not bolt to the Y-block engine or visa versa. The 351W truck will bolt to the 302W, but be sure the early transmission snout is the correct length and that it with interchange with the disk splines. Early clutch disks had a course spline while later ones had a higher spline count and there are differing diameters. If he uses transmission from the Y-block, check the snout length and throw-out bearing fit. Also check the ID of the pilot shaft bushing that is is correct for the transmission. If the snout is a bit too long, it may appear to bolt to the bell housing, but it will eat up the engine crankshaft thrust bearing in a matter of seconds. If the pilot shaft bushing ID is too large, he may experience a vibration and early transmission failure as a result. If it's too small of course the transmission will not bolt up.

Good luck.

australia is a different ball game.the 351c has the same bellhousing as a 302 its the 351m thats the same as 400.

And Yes, in Australia the 302C and 351C were both home grown engines. They used the same block and heads but had a different bore and stroke. I have a 302C in my 75 XB Falcon Ute Project.

No, the 289/302/351W/351C all share the same bell housing pattern and will interchange with the correct flywheel. The 351M/400/429/460 line share the same bell housing pattern and will interchange.

now if i unserstand this right the 302c used a 351c block with a 302 crank.

Correct! People always want the 351C, and I can understand that from a performance standpoint. They both had great heads, the Aussie heads were always stronger than the US version and breathed better. I want to retain the 302C in my build only because it IS a 302C. The cranks actually have the displacement stamped into them.

The fender badges were 4.9 for the 302C and 5.3 for the 351C
