wheel lug nut holes

Hold a lug nut in the hole and look at the rear side.It should not protrude. If it does,it will bottom out on the swedge of the stud without really tightening the wheel.Check with a good original lug,old repros may stick through anyway.I found a nice old set of repros, but I had to grind a little off the ends to get them to seat in the taper.

If you stand above a wheel and look down while it is laying on the ground and look at all 5 lug holes. It will be obvious to the trained eye when one or two or more are out of round (egg shaped) this ocurs from running with the lug nuts loose. Most bent spokes or cracked wheels can be fixed but the lug not holes are the most important part of the wheel. Make sure you buy the good lug nuts so they fit correctly. Some lug nuts are not made correctly and you will tighten them and they will be tight on the stud but still not tight against the chamfer of the wheel. That is why the chamfered washers have become so popular. It canbe mmessed up and still work. I usually carry a lug nut with me to check the holes as a previuos post to see if they extend thru the wheel.
