my son's 64 1/2 Mustang was delivered with at 260. We think the engine has been changed. The current engine code is 4D277. It has gold valve covers with the oil fill in the driver's side cover. Power steering is not the silver pot kind. what should I look for to confirm 260 or 289?

4d277 looks more like a date code than an engine code, like late April of 64. Engine code should be directly above the starter and start with a C. One source tells me a 260 would have a 5 bolt bell housing and a 289 a six bolt valve cover. I thought the very early 289's also had a 5 bolt bell but I could be wrong. I know the 65 I had with a six had the 5 bolt bell and my brother's 66 w/six had a 6 bolt bell.

All 260's five bolt, as well as early 289's. Later are 6 bolt, as are all 302's A C2OE or C3OE P/N on the block would make me start thinking 260, But the only positive way is to pull a head and measure bore.

I believe the small blocks went six bolts the last half of the 65 production run, might have been 66, don't have my "Ford bible" in front of me, either way it was a mid year change.

Pull a valve cover and see if there is a raised "289" on the head with a single dot between the springs in the rear at the firewall . All the 289 heads had the raised numbers . Not sure about the 260 engine .
By your description it sound like a 289 . Look under the valve cover on the heads on either side , doesn't matter and that should tell you if you have a 289 or not .
