Water pump

My model t has a Bergs water pump that is leaking where the shaft goes into the pump housing. i tried tightening up the threaded nut that supports the shaft thinking that there may be a packing inside that would seal up, but to no avail.

Now i'm wondering if this leak is normal or is the pump serviceable ?

The vehicle is a 1926 tudor sedan not that it matters but i didn't want anyone to think i was talking about my 29 A pickup in my Avatar

Thanks
Scott

Not sure what the Berg's looks like for sure Vision but if there's a gland nut that you can tighten where the shaft enters the pump you can be sure there's packing in there. Mac's part # for teflon packing is A8524T if you want to replace it. Wind it in the direction the pump turns. #2: Is there a grease fitting on the pump? If so it usually lubes the shaft end and the packing. A few shots of grease could be all you need.

Thanks for the info Charlie, the pump looks like the usual suspect. this one has a grease fitting up in the front portion but nothing in the back part where it's leaking. i guess i'm lucky that i live about 2 miles from Macks.

I was thinking that i'd have to pull the whole thing apart to replace the packing, but now it doesn't sound so bad.

Thanks again

Scott, another solution for the problem is to get the necessary hoses and a fan belt the correct length for no water pump.
Those pumps make good decorations hanging on the garage wall but they do very little if any help with cooling and they do not leak hanging on the wall.

Scott, Willie and actually Henry Ford have the right idea. A T with a clean cooling system runs best as it was designed & filled with water. (Actually the first few Ts were built with water pumps. Ford eliminated the troublesome pump very early as it was unnessary.)

It would be a shame though if his cooling system isn't up to snuff and the pump was providing the necessary cooling. He could spend $5.00 and an hour for replacing the packing as opposed to $800+ for a radiator. I've had 3 T's. 2 with pumps and one with out. I didn't install them and I didn't remove them either. I found that on the last one when I greased it some grease would come out the gland nut at the end of the shaft. This halted any drips for a few rides. Not worth taking off and possibly going for more $$$$.

And if the cooling system is not up to snuff and he runs a water pump, what will it cost when the radiator finally quits transferring heat and the engine cooks? Engine rebuild, tow bill, etc. All this to save $7 month for 10 years? Not me. I like to drive my car and not worry about keeping it rubber banded together. Gas Tanks are another source of frivolous saving.. Just my .02 worth.

Thanks for all the info gentelmen, this is my first model t and i'm looking to learn all i can. the car is in very nice shape and runs cool. i just finished sealing an oil leak and now i think i'll take the easy way out and throw some new packing material in there and get back to enjoying my new toy.

I'll have a few more questions in the near future.

Thanks
Scott
