voltage at points

what should the voltage be at the points from the coil len

6 volts [5-7v] even if you're using 12v battery..

If the points are open, then you should show battery voltage on both coil primary terminals and at the movable contact of the distributor points, if the key is turned to the on position.

If the points are closed and the key is ON, then one coil terminal and both points contacts should be grounded.
