upper bushing screws - tap size?

Replaced the upper bushing in my steering column with a new one from snyders.

Have to drill and tap for screws. What size tap to use?

Just thought someone might know, otherwise I'll have to take the screws with me when I go out and make a trip to the hardware store and fiddle with matching.

Thanks.

Tap and Drill Size

I found a 10-32 tap at Ace hardware (about $6.00). If you do not have a #21 drill, you can use a 5/32 drill. It's about 3 thousands smaller than the #21 drill. I used the 5/32 drill and made several test holes in the old bushing which taped fine. Ace had the #21 drill if you prefer.

Hello Banjoman,
You may want to prefit that upper bushing in the housing, the one I got from Snyders was heavily chromed and took quite a bit of filing to make a light push in fit so that you can center it easily.
I also ended up using short pop rivets to hold it in as my drilling and tapping wasn’t the best.

I used the vertical belt sander i have in the shop to size it for the hole. The drill press should also be my friend too to finish this job. I just needed the measurements.

This is great info. Many thanks to all.
