Trouble with starter

While retiming my engine I set it improperly and when I went to start the engine it kicked back and misfired. After setting the timing properly, I went to start it and the starter sounded terrible, although it turned the engine over. I removed the starter and found that the Bendix spring had come loose from the bolt that holds it in place. The bolt was bent and the eye that is bent into the end of the spring had opened up. I am running a 6:1 head. I replaced the parts and re installed the starter. It still sounds the same way although it cranks the engine. I am wondering if the kickback bent the armature shaft? Has anyone had this problem and what was the fix?

Yup, I would suspect the shaft is bent. Try taking the starter out and removing the bendix, and spin it up by briefly connecting a battery. You might be able to see the wobble in the shaft. You may be able to straighten it by judicious use of a press.
