A person can put together a frame that supports the oil pan rails or they can fabricate an elaborate crate that supports it upright or laying on it's side. Lycoming used to send me aircraft engines that were supported on a palet with metal brackets to bolt the crank and accessory housing to. Once it was secured, they just stapled a large cardboard box over the top of it to cover it up. This way it could be lifted with a forklift or palet jack. With a support frame it has to be lifted with an engine lift or a block & tackle from a support beam. A crate can have handles attached but the heavy stuff should have skids for fork lifting.
