Tinny Ticking noise in engine

I have a clicking noise (tin tone) in the engine. At first I thought it to be the starter bendix clicking back off the ring gear and does the one on my engine test stand but that is not it.
It seems to me a while back someone mentioned something about the lack of a gasket in the oil pump and if I remember correctly (sometimes that is questionable) that made a tin type noise.
Does anybody have any suggestions on this as it is not a sound anything like a wrist pin, rod, main or piston slap. It is irredatic and appears to be more under acceleration under load but now it seems to also do it aat idle. Thanks for any suggestions.

Use a mechanics stethoscope and listen for the noise, remove the fan belt first, maybe you will find the culprit there. It is much safer without the fan spinning, and a bit quieter too.

sounds like you have a valve/valve guide not being happy living together: try some marvel mystery oil through the carb:

Does it tick twice? Piston Wrist Pin

Does it change sound or diminish as you change spark advance? Big end of the connecting rod.

High on the head? Valve

You might try Les Andrews Vol. 3. The best troubleshooting by sound available.
