Tighten Fan Belt

The generator is usually just tight enough that you can move it outward to tighten the belt. It helps to use a stout stick to leverage against the block. Some engines have a steel finger that will keep the generator in place and that is attached to one of the bolts that hold the timing gear cover on. The fan belt does not need to be extremely tight. You should be able to push the long span in about an inch. If too tight it will wear out the water pump bearing. If you cannot move the generator you can loosen the bolt that attaches it to the block with two 3/4 inch wrenches. I use a socket wrench on one end and a box end on the other. Tighten the bolt to the point where it holds the generator in place but so that you can move it to tighten the belt with the stick.

The old timey way is to find an appropriate thickness piece of wood and wedge it in to hold the belt tight.
