The Farmer Phaeton

The large end of the wheel cylinder should be towards the front of the backing plate, not on the rear side as picture shows and Rich pointed out. Maybe the other side is the same and the assemblies should be switched side to side if you're going to be using them.

I am pretty sure the brake job is what sidelined the car. some of the wheel axle nuts were hand tight.

We restored a 2dr pheyaton from Uraguay. If it could be broken it had been broken and welded. The trans case had been welded on the inside but it had new complete gear set.The steering gear was like new inside. That is all we used from the chasis. Believe it or not the right hand gas tank was the easiest part to find.

yep

FWIW, my guess it’s an early’29. Forged fender brackets, powerhouse generator, CI sediment bowl but has outside door handles. Most likely park brake located in front of gearshift originally. Plenty of good bare chassis’s and parts if you need.

Depending on how much more is "messed up" on the chassis and your intensions for the end product; it may be a good move to look around and find a decent chassis out from under a car whose body is being used for a hot rod. Not uncommon to find these; even pulled out from restored A's.

Solid advice. My initial plan is basically an inventory, then a plan. Make it run, go and stop first. Then seats.

Every step helps determine what the car will be but probably a hydraulic brake full fendered car to play on the dirt with. 30's and 40's style. once it is running and going I will start to worry about rust repair etc (relatively minor). As an example the 21" wheels on it were shot. I have decent 19s that need clean up and paint so that is likely what I will run.

any thoughts on these? Three on either side.

Maybe flag holders (?).

That windshield is going to be tough to do anything with the way the posts have been welded to the door pillar. Is there any sign of the steering column being on the right side originally? Hard to make out in your picture but it appears that the column brace bracket is cut off now and out of position (?). Your work is definitely cut out in many areas.

Instead of naming your car "Henry" or "Betsy" or "Gracie", have some fun with English language phonetics and call it the "Pharmer Phaeton". You're halfway there already with the second word anyway. :)

Valves are replaced. Noticed several large cracks in the valve cover.. Have to go scrounge one off the old motor from the pickup.....

Somebody tried to stop leaks around the valve cover by overtightening the bolts or the mechanic was too zealous. If they are standard hardware soft bolts, they can snap if tightened too much. I have drilled out and re-tapped maybe a dozen broken bolts in this area over the years. Using a good gasket sealer and tightening the bolts in a cross pattern, they don't need to be cranked down at 85 ft.lbs. to secure the cover and stop leaking. Just tighten them until they stop - then YOU stop. Leaking from the valve cover is not very common unless the gasket had been improperly installed. The oil return pipe is another story.

On this car, I am not planning to worry about oil leaks less than a quart a week...LOL Not immediately at least. Right now I am just trying to get the motor to run a little to see if it is decent enough to run for a while. If it is, then I will put better parts on it. Most of this car needs to be stripped down and gone through before it even yard drives. On the good side I did get my paperwork accepted by Massachusetts for a title. If an audit doesn't kick it out, I will be happy.

Don't knock those old farmer fixes, if they hadn't done the fixes the car would been part of a beer can or Toyota.
