Test Results - Helmet Dist on my Allen Syncrograph

Thought the vacuum nipple on the Ford adapter would just thread into the port on the distributor just like in the vid posted above, but not so lucky. Was thinking of cutting off a portion of the original vacuum line from the distributor to the carb, but then remembered that I got a few of the original Ford vacuum fittings from Charlie in NY. Then fabbed up a line from some 3/16” brake line I had lying around. Also used one of the adapters from my hand vacuum pump kit from the hard brake line to the hose going to the machine. Hope it all works.

Bad news. After adjusting the timing again, was finally ready to test the vacuum brake and seems the vacuum pump is no longer working. Initially I was getting a very faint reading on the gauge of about 0.1 to 0.2 H2O. Thought there might be a leak somewhere in the path to the distributor, but even with the vacuum hose disconnected to the vacuum port on the machine and with my finger covering the vacuum port there was no reading on the gauge. Don’t even feel a vacuum on the port at the rear of the pump. Damn!
Not sure what type of pump it is and if I can McGuyver it into working. Looks like some type of rotary vane? type pump. Will just turn the vacuum
brake adjusting screw in 1.5 turns once it contacts the washer. I noted that it took 5 full turns to get the adjusting screw to just start lifting the washer.
If anyone has thoughts on how to fix the vacuum pump, please let me know.

A little bit of Marvel mystery oil added to the vaccum pump port may work.

I suspect the pump is a vane type, I would suggest that you completely disassemble the pump and clean and lube it. It's not a big job

That’s what I thought as I’m familiar with a rotary vane AC compressor we manufactured, looking in at the rear of the pump there’s some kind of weird “floating” piston affair that rotates with the main shaft.

The brass coloured “piston” moves up/down when I rotate the shaft by hand. The piston “sleeve” as well moves in in arc (I think). I’ve never seen anything like it. I wonder if the mechanism has come loose or come apart. I don’t have time now to dig into it any further.
