steering wheel

Good morning,
I have a repro steering wheel that leaves my hands black everytime I drive my car. Any fixes or solutions for this problem would be helpful.

take the wheel off and sand it down and paint it with SEM rubber bumper paint it comes in a spray can most auto body supply stores have it and it hold up real well.

thank you,
mike

I restored an original steering wheel that had been painted gloss black with some chipped paint.

After sanding with 300 grit wet & dry and cleaning well, I used Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter CP199 from NAPA followed with Krylon 1613 Semi-Flat (NOT SEMI-GLOSS) Acrylic Laquer available from Grainger (1AVU1). Make sure you follow directions for both primer and topcoat!

After painting, I let it set for about a week and then rubbed it out with a soft cloth.

Turned out great. Looks like original non-painted finish.

No promises on a repro but I would think if you cleaned it very well with a paint prep cloth it would work.

The two cars that I use the most, a Coupe and a Roadster, have original steering wheels that will give my hands a black stain when it is humid. I carry a towel in the car and wipe the wheels when necessary. I have decided to not paint the steering wheels. Gar Williams
